According to an interview done with Carl (CEO of Mojang) by BebopVox, Minecraft will be getting some much needed love to it's modding support very soon.

The new modding API has long been requested by modders, as currently, the modding support is all unofficial. Tools such as bukkit will finally be getting a supported method of integrating their mods into Minecraft, blowing open the doors to developers.

Info is at 2:20 in this week's Minecraft Monday show. Listen to the first part for some juicy info on new Mojang employee's!

Bukkit cannot be really considered as a tool, but a server software instead.

Finally, it's been on the list of future additions for months now, I hope they get around to adding other stuff on that list.

Er.. Well, in the Video he only says we´ll see something in January to show us where its gonna go and maybe! a timeline. No word of the release of the Mod API.
That said, there was also a newspost on THIS very side where Jeb (you know, the new lead developer of Minecraft) said its very unlikely that there will be an official API before March!

EDIT: You know, it´s news like this one, that gets people false hope and in the end it´ll be the guys at Mojang that have to deal with the flamecrap they´ll get for not keeping a timeline they never announced.

I can't resist correcting that... If it's just plural employees, there's no apostrophe needed. But, fantastic news about the mod API, I look forward to many great mods making Minecraft even better.
