use the cave systems to find ores easier, large caves have a lot of ore on show.

Your best bet is to either go spelunking or digging your own mine.  There are a bunch of threads on here about the best mining techniques; if you are just starting out, look up "strip mine".  Try to make sure you are mining at or below sea level (preferably below).

Also, here's a link you may find helpful: http://www.minecraft...ning_Techniques

It's a bit of a long read, but it'll give you plenty of ideas to choose from :)

There are a few ways... I'll just mention 2.
Way 1:
1. Search for a Ravine.
2. Jump in the ravine (make sure you jump in 2-3 blocks deep water, go down using water, using fly-cheats, or using creative-mode)
3. And you should find a few cave entrances and a lot of ores (I once found around 15 veins of iron in a ravine, along with 4 veins of gold and 25-30 veins of coal)

Way 2:
1. Dig a hole
2. Go branchmining*
3. And you should find a lot of ores, not as many as Way 1 but whatever... Some people like to dig for their stuff.

* Is digging tunnels while staying at the same height...
Tip: Press F3, and the Y-coordinate is the layer you're on.
Ore layers:
Coal: Everywhere in the ground
Iron: Layer 64 and below (I would prefer branchmining at layer 45-55 to avoid accidently digging to the surface)
Gold: Layer 32 and below (I did read somewhere that layers 28-32 have more gold than other layers... Not sure if this is true)
Redstone: Layer 16 and below (I prefer branchmining at layer 12-16 too avoid the many lavalakes at layer 9/10)
Lapis Lazuli: Layer 32 and below
Diamond: Layer 16 and below (I prefer branchmining at layer 12-16 too avoid the many lavalakes at layer 9/10)

for one thing, why is this a question? for another thing, go deeper. if you want a fun way, explore deep caves. however, if you want an efficient way, look up a branch mining tutorial, and make one at layer 16

This. If you know that, why do you ask? Minecraft isn't really a hard game, just play it naturally it has lots of fun to offer

Usually, you need to look around when you are digging. You should find them if you are not unlucky!

Explore caves. Grab every ore you see in the walls. You'll end up with at least 2 stacks of iron and coal in the end. Easiest and quickest way to get iron. Gold, diamond, and redstone are much deeper down in cave systems.

just dig to bedrock and then go about 5 layers above it and mine out. you will find most diamond at this level or just find caves

if all you want is iron with no fuss, a branch mine with 4 blocks between branches works fine.  spelunking works very well too, but requires many many torches, and armor.
