Hello Everyone,

First of all I want to make clear that this mod was made by Gnatpat and updated and improved by Th3Guy and then again updated by Grim3212.He is currently working on this mod. I started this topic by his request and I'm also the one who did the textures. Don't like the textures? Check the textures section for more. All feedback is welcome!

So with that out of the way, let's see what this mod has to offer or will offer you in the future.
Click '-Download' in te content menu below to go directly to the download.

This mod adds butterflies to the game. Different butterflies spawn in different locations. Below there is a list of all butterflies with their spawn locations and conditions. Some butterflies will be rare finds to make it a little bit more exciting. That's why the information of most of the rare butterflies is not shown on this page. You will be able to catch these butterflies dead or alive. Dead Butterflies can be made into mountable trophies and Caught Butterflies can be tamed and released. This way you can start either a Butterfly Gallery or a Butterfly Garden. They also really add a nice atmosphere to your game. Currently they don't have other uses but this will change in the near future. Enjoy the mod.

Featured Video so you can see what his mod is all about ,made by IHasCupquake! Thanks!
Spoiler alert: Some of the very rare butterflies are shown.

Catching a Butterfly is an easy progress but requires some preparations.

First you will need a net, which is crafted with 2 sticks and 3 strings in this shape:

Recipe:
Spoiler:

This tool can be used to catch the butterflies. Right-click a butterfly to catch it.
If you right-click it witout a butterfly jar in your inverntory, it will become a dead butterfly in your inventory. However WITH a butterfly jar it will be caught alive.
You can craft a normall butterfly jar with 3 glass blocks and 1 wooden planks block in this shape:

Recipe:
Spoiler:

This jar can hold 1 butterfly. So when it's in your inventory while you catch a butterfly, the butterfly will go in the it. Right-click in the air with the jar to release the butterfly. It will then just fly away like always.
There is however a way to tame them. This is done by catching a butterfly while a gold butterfly jar is in your inventory.
The gold jar is crafted with 3 glass blocks and 1 gold ingot in this shape:

Recipe:
Spoiler:

When you catch a butterfly in one of these, it will be tamed. This means that it won't despawn and follow you. Sometimes it will even go and sit on your head. Remove it from your head by right-clicking (it won't toggle following while clicked on your head).

Tamed Butterflies will follow you around  and teleport (once you go to far away) but you can make them fly around like normall (and not teleport) by right-clicking it. Right-click it again to make it follow again.

So when you catch a butterfly without a jar, you will get a dead butterfly. This is used for making butterfly trophies! A butterfly trophy is made with 8 sticks and 1 dead butterfly of any species in this shape:

Recipe:
Spoiler:

Right-click with the trophy on the wall to place it.

Trophy:
Spoiler:

Now you can make your own butterfly gallery or garden!

Version 1.1 Update:

Right-click a butterfly with a yellow flower to obtain an item. The yellow flower will not be 'used' in this version.
We are still discussing if this is overpowered or not.

Spoiler Alert: Here is an image that shows which butterfly gives a certain item.
Remember: Some of the butetrflies aren't available the legit way yet!

Current Features:
- All butterflies spawn naturally.
- Ability to Craft a Butterfly Net.
- Ability to Craft Butterfly Jar and Gold Butterfly Jar
- Ability to Craft and Place Butterfly Trophies.
- Ability to catch a Butterfly and store it in a Jar or catch a dead one without a jar.
- Ability to tame Butterflies using the Gold Jars!
- Ability to let butterflies on your head and remove them by right-clicking.
- Ability to toggle following of Tamed Butterflies by right-clicking them.
- Tamed butterflies teleport to you when you go to far away.
- Ability to change spawn rates using a props file.
- Ability to right-click a butterfly with a yellow flower to obtain an item.

Current Bugs:
- When a lot of mods are installed, some textures might mess up.
- RandoMobs texture issues, I get some random textures for butterflies when installed. Turning off the option will remove textures completely.

Upcoming Features:
- SMP Support
- Breeding (explaining the three butterflies seen when inv. editing)
- Butterfly Encyclopedia.
- Giant Mountable Butterfly (perhaps).

Incompatibilities:
- All mods that aren't compatible with MCForge or Modloader aren't compatible with this mod.
- The non-forge version leaves only 13 item sprite slots to be used.
- Not compatible with the Aether mod.
- Randomobs messes up textures. This also means Optifine incompatibility.

Recommended Mods to use with this mod:
- Dragonflies mod adds another bug to the game. This goes well with the butterflies. Link
- Mo' Creatures adds more animals to fit in.Link
- Better Dungeons helps you get some of the rare butterflies easier! Link

See the Installation Guide in the Download section for details on how to switch between thick and thin winged butterflies.
This section is for texture pack makers/users.

Using the thin wing textures option, there is a possibility of using HD textures (when installed the HD patcher at least). This is great for texture pack makers.

Here is the blue print:
Spoiler:

Texture packs that support this mod will be featured here:

I already made butterfly textures (only the butterfly mobs) for 32x users. Included in the download!

Hope to see more of these soon.

Pretty cool idea, since Minecraft does kinda lack bugs and stuff. Anything else that you would be able to use your butterflies for? Special effects? Aura's?

Eh to me I find that overkill, I like simple mods that are there for the purpose of atmosphere, like I've been trying to tell some of my followers on here, not everything needs to have a magical use.

On my original request thread I placed the idea of butterflies that randomly drop all kinds of dusts/powders over time, kinda like fairies from the fantasy stories. Link is at the bottom of the OP.

Maybe if you collect enough butterflies in jars you can make like a bench or something and make them morph into one butterfly in a huge form. Then you can ride it and fly. that would be EPIC

Could there be a way to toggle spawning?
And also, if you could toggle spawning, could you increase/decrease the amount spawned? I don't want them interfering with my passive mobs XD
But great mod! :)

Ah, good timing! I haven't merged it yet (just fixing bugs) so I'll leave a non-forge version for ya.

I don't think I'm going to add toggle spawn unless OP wants it... but I will try to fix the interfering with passive mobs. I have a idea on how too but it might not be in this next update.

Toggle spawn wouldn't really be fun as it's my intention to make people search. I will make an encyclopedia on the forumpage later, unless it will be added to the game. However, I know that making a new GUI takes a lot of work, so it depends on Th3Guy if such a thing will be added. I'm very happy with the current progress, to say the least.

It shouldn't be too hard. I just need to edit a few things in my other mod (see sig ^_^ ).
