No, not sandwiches. Sandwich. That's right. One sandwich, many recipes. Why?
The sandwich will be a renewable food source. All you need is a wheat farm and animal farm. Not a specific animal, any animal farm (except for sheep or wolves). You could even have a fishing dock. What am I rambling on and on about? I'll show you some pictures to keep you happy.
The sandwich:
Some possible recipes (NOT all of them. There are many more than 36 possible combinations.):
^ Three examples
If you can already tell, you must start with:
The three empty slots MUST be filled in other to craft the sandwich. Here's how to fill the empty slots:
- Place ANY combination of cooked meat (could be 1-3 meats).
- Meat includes Cooked Pork, Steak, Cooked Chicken, and Cooked Fish.
- Fill the remaining empty spaces with eggs or brown mushrooms.
BAM! You have yourself a sandwich. Sandwiches restore every 3 seconds for a minute. It essentially fully heals you if you aren't in combat. They are stackable food items.
Answering the overall question: What's the purpose of a food item with multiple recipes? Well, it allows the player to have a broader reliable food source, instead of a strict recipe.
Useless. the 3 raw beef would heal more. make it take 2 bread and 1 beef and heal full hunger. May seem a bit over powered, but its the only way to make it not useless.
I love this suggestion. I support this so hard that all of my support could hold up the sky, but instead is too busy supporting this suggestion, and so I conclude that *SKY FALLS* Okay that was totally not my fault.
Then don't do that. It's possible, but you don't have to do that. Why don't you use 1 steak and 2 eggs instead?
Because bread heals 3 each and steak heals 4 why would I use 6 worth of bread and 4 worth of meat and eggs for 5 hearts. when I could just eat the meat get one less bar but still have 2 bread that's worth 3 bars each.

OK, what about a side-effect?

I am meowing at my lung’s fullest. I would even argue that the echo that reverberates back to me is the voice of someone I know…
You could make a strange magic sandwich that gives you super abilities, or you just make it heal 9-10 bars.
Edit: or maybe some thing more effective. Since you get limited in movement if you fall to 3 bars how about it heal 7 and gives you "full" status that makes you not lose hunger for a amount of time.
Updated the healing. It's not completely balanced, but it's much better.
Nah. I'd just go go with 7 bars of heal crafted with 2 bread and one meat of your choice. (not chicken) Then gives you the "full" status I talked about. You buffed healing is still useless.
Edit: Or how about it heals 7 hunger bars, and 3-5 health bars.

How about it has the Golden Apple effect, but for hunger points?

MC Cake is made with raw eggs. And you never bake the cake. Does that bother you?

Cool concept by the way!
