Quick question - how large is minimum spider spawn area? Wiki is somewhat conflicted on that, stating "2*2*2 space on solid blocks" in table and "Spiders require an area at least 3 blocks wide by 3 blocks long and two blocks tall for spawning. The top block in this arrangement however can be filled with a transparent block such as glass." in Trivia section. Which statement is true?

3x3 is the surface area required. I'm not 100% sure on the height with solid blocks but they do spawn in a 1 high space with glass for the top block. Furthermore you can get them to spawn in a technicaly 1x1x1 space if the walls are glass panes and a glass top block... i havent found any use for this bit it does mean you need to be careful in designing mob traps if you use glass panes for walls and dont want spiders to spawn.
