Blender is pretty good. It also has a game engine and python scripting.

Yeah, Blender works fine. There's some really good (paid) software also.

DAZ is also another. I know it was free for a while, not sure if it still is.

Blender actually doesn't work very well with Minecraft animations, all the rendered stuff is blurry.

You need to turn off interpolation. It's under the Image Sampling section of the Textures tab in the properties.

Add a texture to your material, and change the type to "Image or Movie." Change the image source to a copy of the texture you need from Minecraft (located in ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/bin/minecraft.jar). Depending (most likely) on what you need, you'll need to do some UV mapping. You'll need to turn of interpolation as said above.
