This is a rather simple mod that allows you to use dragon eggs as compact flying mounts. Simply place and right-click a dragon egg while holding a saddle, it will launch you into the air and turn into an ridable Ender Dragon.
You can control its flight path by simply looking to the direction you want to fly to. You can also use keyboard controls by editing the config file (see section "Configuration" below).
Right-clicking the dragon while flying will turn it into an egg again, safely floating towards the ground, ready to be used yet again. In v0.4, a saddle is required to gain full control over the dragon.

Here's an old video of the whole process (v0.1):

Usage
  • To summon a dragon on ground, right-click a placed dragon egg. To launch the egg and yourself into the air, right-click it while holding a saddle (the dragon will automatically be saddled).
  • Right-click a summoned dragon to transform it back into an egg. When the dragon is flying while doing this, you'll slowly hover with the egg down to the ground.
  • Feed the dragon with a glistering melon for a temporary terrain destruction aura that lasts five seconds.
  • Feed the dragon with blaze powder to enable its fire breath for five seconds.
  • Injured dragons lower their head when grounded. To heal it, feed the dragon with raw fish, chicken, beef or porkchop (four hearts) or with rotten flesh (two hearts).

Configuration
Starting with v0.5, you can customize the control method for flying. You can find the config file in config/mod_DragonMounts.cfg after the first start with the mod.

There are currently three modes for control_mode:

  • MOUSE - Mouse look control: The dragon flies in the direction you're currently looking at. (default)
  • KEYBOARD - Keyboard control: The strafe keys control the direction and jumping/sneaking controls the height.
  • COMBINED - Combined mouse/keyboard control: The horizontal direction is controlled by the mouse, the vertical by jumping/sneaking.

Changelog

0.7:
  • More model and texture updates.
  • Added walking animations.
  • Fixed some minor dragon egg bugs.
  • The dragon's health is now saved and displayed on the egg item as well.
  • Right-clicking a dragon won't mount/unmount you anymore if the current item has an action, such as blocking or eating.
  • Changed default control method for walking.
  • Changed speed control for keyboard/combined method.

Spoiler

Future plans
  • Add support for ModLoader or other mod loading APIs done in v0.2
  • Slightly decrease the size of ridable dragons done in v0.2
  • Make it less destructive/overpowered, maybe by adding a proper collision detection done in v0.2/v0.3
  • Think of a better, creative way to activate and "mine" dragon eggs kind of done in v0.2+
  • Display the health of the dragon and save it between usages (skipped, too difficult to implement) the health will be saved in 0.65+
  • Make other mobs aggressive towards mounted dragons (I think it should work in v0.4+)
  • Implement a more direct control system (optionally available in 0.5)
  • Implement walking animations/controls done in v0.7
  • Add multiplayer support. Somehow. :Notch:

holy shit, this mod looks so fucking amazing ! I'm going to try this right now !

Not liking how it edits so many base classes though.

Love the mod, just one suggestion though, maybe a way to stop and land ?

Also if you get a banner/sig/w.e I would definitely use it (:

:D this is my suggestion make more dragons and mor eggs [for more dragons] obtain them by puting enderdragon egg in crafting table and something elseto use to craft it :D
EDIT: the dragon is so HARD to controll can you make it like this we have to move the dragon usong WASD and if we dont move it the dragon stop :D that'll be easier to move it

Thanks :)

Well, right-clicking the dragon is currently the only way to stop and land. Animations for land movements would be nice, but are probably very difficult to implement, at least if it's supposed to look as good as flying.

And yes, it modifies some original classes, but mostly those that are related to the Ender Dragon and the egg. An upcoming Modloader version should resolve the conflicts with other mods.

Welcome,

For me all it would have to be is the dragon falling down to the floor, and just standing, i don't think it would have to be as nice as the flying, as long as i can put it in my backyard, it's all good :P .

Good to know there's a ModLoader version coming (:

Keep up the good work, i can guarantee this mod will become famous very soon (:

Hehe, my expectations aren't that high. It's not something groundbreaking yet (well, game-breaking maybe :iapprove:).

Well, don't expect full multiplayer support soon. It would be the griefer's dream at this stage and I share Jeb's concerns that it will stress servers a lot when several players are flying around at the same time. And, of course, it's difficult to code. ;)

But I managed to do an idle animation of Ender Dragons on ground:

Posted Image

I had to re-model and realign the legs for that, it would look very strange with the original leg proportions. :D
Now if I had any idea how to make them actually walk, then this could become indeed an interesting mod. And I need to figure out how to fold the wings, it's impossible with the current code base...

Oh, and I ported the ImageGenerator class for MCP. Notch gracefully released it earlier when he textured the dragon model. Could be useful for others that are texturing complex models:

Yes, right now you can just fly towards the ground to "land", and look up to lift off again. Not very smooth, but... it works ;)

Wait, does that mean you updated it already ? If so you should probably change the Download in the OP , cause it still says v1.
