im just curious, i play with linux off and on, because i havent found a reason to swith completely to mint. ive got an ati4850 1 gig which i know has problems with propriatary driver so im aware that ill need to use the free drivers provided by mint. notch should really get minecraft in the offcial repositorys. that said, how does minecraft work in linux, as far as im concerned, it eaither works flawlessly (with proper configuration of course), loads all mods with zero problems, and work just as good if not better then on seven. meaning, running it in linux would be considered platinum like in wine. if not, then im staying on windows7. i dont need exta headache!

If you are not sure, stay with windows.

[Minecraft on Linux]
I’m using Arch Linux since a few years now, and never had problems with the games I want.

$ uname -rms
Linux 3.1.2-1-ARCH x86_64

$ free -m
			 total used free shared	buffers cached
Mem:		  3956	   3214		742		  0		303	   2009
-/+ buffers/cache:		901	   3055
Swap:		 4298		 60	   4238

$ grep name /proc/cpuinfo | uniq
model name	: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU	 E8400  @ 3.00GHz

$ lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G94 [GeForce 9600 GT] (rev a1)

$ xrandr | grep connected
default connected 2560x1440+0+0 0mm x 0mm
Minecraft works on fullscreen with HD texture pack (64x) on around 70 frames. I never had a mod that was not supported (some mods using the Java desktop API for opening the web browser or configuration files, which seems not to work in Linux, but this is nothing gameplay related.)
Removing and copying back the program file
is not a solution for configuration problems.

I've never played minecraft on any other platform than Linux (Ubuntu). And I've never had any Linux related problems with it.

I have had some experience with Linux, and that experience has shown me that it can run just about anything. Also, I have seen that there are whole Linux OS's dedicated to run minecraft server. I don't think it's an IF Linux can run minecraft; I think it is a HOW.

If it works, it should work well. If it doesn't... then you're outta luck. ATI (now AMD) linux drivers have a tendency to suck... can't seem to get Minecraft runnin' on my laptop under Ubuntu (but will work under windows). Only true way to tell is to try it and see.

Afaik, the repos don't have any provision for nonfree software, so I can't see it being added any time soon :P.

Here there be dragons. Please click to help it grow :) (If it's in fog, it's unwell and not in need of clicks)

This has been my experience as well -- Minecraft itself works well, except when my ATI video drivers get involved, because those are not well supported by Linux -- in fact, I just had to ditch the proprietary drivers, because my video card fell off both Linux's and ATI's support horizons (time for a new computer anyway...).  That said, Minecraft does manage to run pretty well anyway -- it would exit with a crash, and even without the proprietary drivers, its only a bit laggier.

No, you need the .jar file, not the .exe.
