1.0 saw the swamps become ugly, with a jarring contrast to the surrounding biomes- without creating the 'earie/spooky'feeling Notch wanted.
Generally when you imagine a swamp, it dark because it's misty/foggy, not because it's been painted black.
Firstly we need to go back to green vegetation. Now to make it spooky.
-Swamp fog; behaves in a similar way to void fog, except it's dark green, and isn't effected by sunlight.
When you walk into a swamp, the fog gets thicker- eventually reducing vision to 15 blocks (horizontal); looking up you ca still see the sky, though now with a greenish tint.
(might be able to do this with coloured air blocks- same ID as air, but with a damage value)
Swamps are darker, so all light sources are reduced by 2-3 levels.

A mighty machine built within the wake
Of a long dead dream, little demon awake
The citizens sleep, never quite knowing when
The device will reawaken, hungry again.
I really like the fog idea. Maybe it should have a similar system to the current render distance, and as you get closer to the center, the render distance (with a green tint) smoothly gets smaller.

I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to death, Nor known to life
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything
So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works

That would work, except leaving the swamp would extend the render distance and allow players to see through the swamp.
It's a good idea, but we need something on top to keep the fog when the player leaves (also so flying above, you see the treetops sticking out of the fog).

I loved the swamps the way they were when they first appeared in the game and absolutely hate them now. Everytime I see one I have to avert my eyes and go a different direction cuz my urge to blow it up is so huge
It really hasn't bothered me, but the fog idea is great. Maybe there could be ruins at the center (maybe a strong hold or something different) and as you get closer, white eyes peer at you through the fog. they appear more and more as you get closer.. then you get to the center and have to battle...........

I have a good idea for a swamp overhaul. During 1.1, I had a few automation mods along with NatureOverhaul. When I first started the map, I set the tree/sapling growth rate to super fast, then I went underground to mine for a while. When I came back up, there was a swamp next to my mineshaft. NatureOverhaul had completely filled in every single spot with trees. Most of them were branched trees, so there was space to walk underneath them. But the swamp looked absolutely amazing, it truly looked like a swamp. The ground was so dark that mobs actually spawned there.

I agree with this, REAL swamps are FILLED WITH TREES, huge trees are the best, the color, i dont like it, nevermind that, there should also be less land to make it realistic.
Swamps need more of a water/land mixture, not huge spaces of land and huge lakes to make up for it. Also more trees, maybe bushes like in jungles, make the water in swamps murky when you swim in them, and maybe add alligators in the water for more challenge

That IS a good idea. Would make swamps worth visiting.
