An invisibility effect exists in the code, however it does not make you invisible
I believe it may have been accessible in 1.9pre2, however Notch watered down alchemy so now there are only a few effects you can use.

Almost every single item in this game can be used to grief another player. This includes your bare hands because you can push people, kill people, and/or break their blocks. I guess we have to ban them in SMP, then!

Not exactly, it could be like invisibility it most other games, where you are never truly invisible, but transparent enough where you're hard to notice, but when in close proximity to a person you become more visible. Also, when you attack you could become very visible for a second, and moving fast (not sneaking) you would be more visible and sprinting you'd be very visible. that would prevent it form being over powered and round it out.

You missed that entire the point of my post. The guy who I quoted basically said that it would be abused in SMP as a griefing tool. My argument is that we already have much easier and more powerful griefing tools at our disposal, the most infamous of which are TNT, lava, flint + steel, and tools (break the blocks that people are standing on, push them, and/or kill them). A new feature to the game shouldn't be built around abusers, because abusers will never go away no matter is done or what items you keep from them. It sucks, but it's reality.

that would just make this into quite the randy little game wouldn't it?
imagine all the sneeking around peoples houses and private areas you could do.
it would be great for pvp!
