I deleted my .minecraft folder to wipe the slate clean for the release. Now all the launcher will do is give the above error message. I even tried Options -> Force Update. Help?

This is easy to fix.
First, find your .minecraft folder.
In the folder, create a new folder called bin.
Now, place the RC2 minecraft.jar in the bin folder. http://assets.minecr...2/minecraft.jar
Open Minecraft and login.
This should solve your problem.

I have deleted .minecraft, so I made a new one in the same spot. I threw in the minecraft.jar in /bin like you said. I'm still getting the same error.
Place it in your bin.
It is Minecraft 1.4, so you will need to force an update AFTER your first login. Its the only full bin I have in my archives

Thanks.
Actually, I have my copy of 1.9 archived, but it's full of mods, texture packs, old saves, and stats. I want a clean slate.
The first time I used the Minecraft launcher, it didn't have this error. It's only on all subsequent attempts to install the game. What's different? Is there a registry key or file I can delete to stimulate it to create a fresh install of Minecraft on this PC?

This is also affecting a friend's laptop. I installed Minecraft a few months ago, he deleted it, and now he bought it but can't install it. Sure, I could copy my binaries over to his machine, but isn't there any other way? What causes the error?
