Introduction
Ever felt that snowmen aren't much of guardians? Maybe that you need minions to patrol the battlements of your castles? Golems are the answer - even to questions you haven't had yet.
The towering sentinels will defend you and your territory from the ravages of enemy mobs. Just don't expect them to walk through doors - they're about twice your height!
Golems can guard your home, serve as bodyguards and patrol the roads between your far-flung outposts. They can even serve you in the Nether with ease - the enormous obsidian constructs are fireproof by virtue of their skin.
Using the Mod Creating Golems
Golems require three components: an obsidian skin, a golem skeleton and the sentience-awakening heartstone.
Golem Skeleton 1x Iron Chestplate, 1x Iron Leggings, 1x Iron Boots, 2x Pistons, 2x Iron Ingot
Right click anywhere in the world with your Golem Figurine to create a golem. Golems do require Coal as fuel to function, so remember to have an 8-stack to fuel them! Supply a golem with coal by right-clicking on the golem while holding coal.
An individual golem is expensive, but even after being killed by an enemy (or at your unkind hands), the golem's skeleton is left intact. Even if the skeleton is damaged by the golem's death (it happens every once in a while), you can scavenge some iron and obsidian from the remains. What this means is that crafting a new golem from the remains of the first really only costs a Golem Heartstone and some Obsidian - a meager price to pay for the services of a golem!
Warforged Weapons
What's the fun of having your own personal army if you can't outfit them with weapons? Well, actually, you can. Weapons last almost forever - multiple golems can reuse the same set of weapons. Simply right click on a golem to give it the Warforged weapon you are holding. Don't even think about using Warforged weapons for yourself - they are far too heavy for you to use.
Warforged Falchion 1x Iron Sword, 2x Iron Ingot
Warforged Battleaxe 2x Iron Block, 3x Iron Ingot
Warforged Bow 3x Iron Ingot, 3x Iron String
Commanding Golems
Roll call All golems within hearing distance reply NAME, come Named golem walks towards you NAME, rename to NEWNAME Named golem gets a new name NAME, add to group GROUPNAME Named golem is added to the specified group NAME, remove from group GROUPNAME Named golem is removed from the specified group NAME, health Named golem tells you its health NAME, status Named golem tells you what it's currently doing and how much fuel it has left NAME, die Named golem self-destructs, destroying even its skeleton NAME, stop Named golem stops executing its current action NAME, guard [for time] Named golem guards the area around it (for some time, if specified) NAME, guard me [for time] Named golem guards you (for some time, if specified) NAME, new patrol [here/there] [for time] Named golem patrols (for some time, if specified). If a location is provided, it is the first patrol location. NAME, add to patrol here/there Named golem's most recent patrol gains a new patrol point at the end of its patrol cycle. NAME, remove from patrol here/there Named golem's most recent patrol loses a patrol point that is close (within 1 block) of the given location NAME, remove from patrol # Named golem's most recent patrol loses the given patrol point (e.g., 1 means first, 2 means second, etc. NOT ZERO BASED)
NOTES
You can set up a chain of commands using 'then'
For example: NAME, come then guard
This example has the named golem guard the position you are at
You can address all golems within hearing range using "All Golems"
For example: All Golems, guard me
This example has all the golems within hearing range cluster around you and fight off enemies that they see
You can address multiple golems within hearing range by using more names and commas
For example: Guard 1, Guard 2, Guard 3, stop then guard me
This example has the three named golems stop whatever they are currently doing and guard the player
You can address golems that are part of a group by using the group name
For example: Guard 1, Guard 2, Guard 3, add to group Guards
Guards, stop then guard me
This example adds the three named golems to the group "Guards", then tells all golems in that group to guard the player.
[for time] means that you can type in, for example, "guard me for 10 seconds" or "guard me for 1 minute". The default unit of time is milliseconds - 0.001 seconds. You cannot, however, type in "new patrol for 1 minute and 42 seconds" - that works out to be the same as "new patrol for 1 minute" and ignores the "and 42 seconds" portion. You can abbreviate "seconds" to "sec" and "minutes" to "min".
here/there means you type either "here" or "there".
For example: Golem 1, add to patrol here
This example has the named golem add a new patrol point to its patrol at the location the player is currently standing at.

Suggestions and Upcoming Features/Bugfixes
(In Progress for v1.2.X) Create Elder Golem, remnants of a now-dead civilization, that spawns near/in ruins and strongholds. It will be initially hostile to the player and his Golems, but may be "won over" through some yet-undetermined process (likely involves giving items). Cannot be crafted. Looking for appropriate assets.
(In Progress for v1.2.X) Create Elder Commander Golem that can lead other Elder Golems to battle with tactics.Looking for appropriate assets.
(Under Consideration for 1.X) Golems that can build edifices (such as walls) and/or collect resources. Will be seriously considered for the 1.3.X release.
Suggest some more features! But do not suggest that I write a natural language parser. Please suggest, for example, new commands, new types of golems and so forth.
For Modders and Interested Players
Overview of Golem AI coming soon
LIFO Instruction stack to emulate memory
Polymorphic Instruction class and children to allow for a variety of Instructions
Basic text parsing to allow chaining an infinite number of Instructions to an infinite number of Golems
Source code will come after the 1.1 release and some commenting of my code
OMG!!! YOU COPIED THIS FROM ANOTHER MOD! everything is pretty much copied except theres no battery in the middle and the texture and some new items you copied pretty much all of the recipe please change it a little to make it original

I'm sorry? I asked a friend for help with the recipes and this is what they suggested. By the way, is there another mod that has intelligent obedient golems or are only the recipes the same? Also, which recipe? I'm assuming you mean the skeleton recipe. If it's copied, I'll be happy to change it for the 1.1 release.
::EDIT::
Ah, searched the forums. Probably should have done this earlier. I take it you mean http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/682246-181-golem-mod-v20-mob/page__hl__golem+mod? Looks like I need to change the skeleton recipe and have a talk with my friend.
As for functionality, a quick skim makes it appear as though his golem follows redstone paths or something. I'm not entirely sure. However, my mod does look more advanced AI-wise (:dry.gif: yes, I'm biased...) because it allows for deliberate patrol points and guarding the player WITHOUT TELEPORTING. His mod, on the other hand, has better inventory control of the golem. I'll have to talk with him about how we can either make our mods different or merge them together or something. Thank you for letting me know, though.

This is much better than that other Golem mod, it was stuck in v2.0, and while the redstone idea was cool, this one has many more commands and is quite a bit more epic.
While the idea is not original, neither is about the other 4 golem mods that have come and gone, so you can HESH, k?
Everything works except the skin, it wont show anything but whiteness
Could you provide some details of how your Minecraft is configured? For example, are you using HD textures? Did you follow the instructions exactly? Also, do you use an OSX or Linux computer? (I ask because I haven't tested my mod on those two OS's :tongue.gif:)

If you can tell me which mods, I can try to reproduce the situation on my computer so I can figure out the source of the problem. May I suggest copying the lo13_Golem folder from the zipped mod into your minecraft.jar file again? It's the best I can offer until I can reproduce the bug.
never mine but will you try and make the golems not so tall? how about taller by half the players height instead of being 3 times as tall as the playerplease dont add forge i cant use it

The size of the golems is intentional; they should not be able to pass through the same openings as the player. They are huge creations, and I wanted to make them look like it.
As for MinecraftForge, I hope to add it once chat integration is supported so that I don't have to modify as many core files - it improves the compatibility of the Golem Mod with other mods. And I don't know - chat integration may never come to MinecraftForge for one reason or another. Maybe I'll end up making my Tachyon API larger over time (it's included in the download; it currently only does a few things so it's not an independent download). For now, however, MinecraftForge is a nonissue - I'm not using it, after all. :tongue.gif:
::EDIT::
Also, I changed the recipe for creating a golem skeleton. It'll be changed when the next release comes out.
2 new types of golems I think would be interesting:
Forest Golem:
Same crafting recipe, except that instead of obsidian to craft the figurine, you use logs. They would be notably weaker. They would also appear more... Foresty I suppose.
Fire/Nether golem:
Same recipe except you use netherrack instead of obsidian. They set enemies on fire for a short time after attacking. They could also set you ablaze as well, so be careful.
Perhaps aggressive Nether/Fire golems could spawn in the nether and in lava pools below ground (maybe on the lava pools) and that benevolent forest golems could spawn in well, forests.
A+ mod I must say. Plus it works with grovesprites :biggrin.gif:

Neat, haven't bothered to check which of our mods came first and frankly I don't really care; what you've done with the AI certainly sounds a lot more advanced than what I have going (personally I prefer simpler user interfaces, but then I also have had issues making it follow my supposedly simple redstone path design). Not sure how well merging would work, but (as another poster pointed out) mine has been stuck in its current version for some time due to both my disinterest in working on it till the official release and my being distracted by another project. For now I'll leave it open for a possibility, but I'd say yours is definitely different enough for me to not say you stole it :tongue.gif:
