I am completely baffled by the amount of work you people put into this.
The digging alone must have taken hundreds of hours, nearing a thousand. I know from personal experience that I, along with a friend, spent four hours just flattening a small mountain top, going through several diamond tools. By the end of that, I was pretty much desperate to never dig out that much stone and dirt again.
Despite that, I later on spent at least fifteen hours on trying to hollow out an underground complex for a temple, with a fair amount of dynamite mind you, removing nowhere near the amount of stone you guys must have dug out. (All the work I did, I sadly lost in a piston bug, corrupting my server, setting it back a week)
I'm not saying its not legit, but if it is, then this is an extreme amount of work and you have my utmost admiration and have me a bit worried that you're all quite insane.
Hell, even if it wasn't legit, I'd still think it was very impressive, no matter what tools you used.
Thanks for all the feedback guys! Yes we are a legit server as i outlined above. I'm sure if you watch my project updates on youtube you'll be convinced that we did this legit. (if that matters to you) I've been doing them every few months since we started over a year ago. They're nothing entertaining like the yogscast, but they might interest you to see it in various stages over the months.
just fyi, during alpha we were allowed to use the tool health regen bug, but after that was fixed (ages ago!) we've been sacrificing all our diamonds and iron to the cobble god. =)
Truely awesome! I myself play creatively in survival mode (without mods!) so I know what a ***** it is to terraform. It is truely inspiring to see what can be accomplished the "old fashioned way" when people co-operate on a project. I watched your vids, saw your furnaces and stores, and know it's definately a ligit operation. Again, awesome work....to all involved!! Thanks for sharing.
"Legit" means "I obtained the resources through mining and crafting." Not "Well, I placed everything without MCEdit, but I TMI'd in about 500 stacks of cobble." This is about as legit as Dolly Parton's tits. Still, legitimacy issues aside, epic build. +1 Internet.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Random acts of petty fanboyish hatred?

Do issues of legitimacy matter with stone structures any more, especially with piston-driven cobble generators?

Why would we TMI 500 stacks of cobble when we have 46,000 stacks in storage?
one of the first few project updates i did:
edit:
I will agree that way too many people misuse the term legit in the way you said. For this reason I will give you an exaustive definition of what legit means for us.
No flying
No Spawning (No TMI)
No speed hacking
No MC EDIT
No Cuboid
No X-ray
No Duping
No TNT ...grief free server =)
No Voxelsniper
Mobs: Off
Health: Infinite
Food: needed to sprint but hunger cannot kill you.
Instead of ladders we use a mod to create "lifts" as is demonstrated in probably every single video I've done.
Until item durability was saved we were allowed to "repair" our items by dropping them. (this bug was fixed ,and therefore unusable, before the first "main hall" was completed back in february 2011.)
Tools created with iron and diamonds and wood mined from our alpha generated world by hand by the players. All mining done with those tools at the standard mining speed and durability that you will find in a 100% vanilla copy of minecraft.
We rely on the donations of time and "money" (diamonds)from the other 1500 whitelisted players to run the project, however the majority of funding and time comes from a much smaller core group of players.
Oh ****....
I take back my last post. Just watched some videos on the YT channel, and I feel like an idiot. Now I have to decide between Godcraft and Industrial Rage! Nooo which will I spend my greenbacks on?

Design is mostly done on the test server, we're working on the floor and waiting for the Godcraft.com server to upgrade to a stable 1.2 bukkit build to do the rest. (restricted by the height of 1.1 right now)
This is going to be built above ground so it won't take forever to dig out legit.
The server requires a $10 fee to help pay for server hosting and admin's time. (random people: don't both complaining, we heard it all before over a year ago when we started. Complaining won't change it.)
Moria is on the Build 1 server, but it's not the only project on the server, it's just the project that I run.
When you're on the server, you can ask Bagline, Jokers2, Flupperz, or Bodydrag what help is needed. (honestly there won't be a ton of help needed, like there was on previous digging projects, but still there may be something)
You can also see my latest update video below:
We'll also probably take a break after finishing the 21st hall to play Diablo 3.
Live and updated version hosted on Godcraft.com
Current project thread: http://godcraft.com/.../moria-v3.2496/
Most up to date map:
We did this legit, no flying, no spawning, no world/map editors, and mobs/damage were off.
The proof is in the project updates on my youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/muntaindw
