I recently got my PS3 controller to work with my PC, but there's one thing bugging me - it's hard to move straight forward/backward/left/right, because of the odd analog detection.
Pic ilustrating it:

Is there any way to smoothen the detection somehow? I'm using MotioninJoy if it makes any difference.

I'm not sure. I only use my ps3 controller on the computer with a ps2 emulator.
But that controller is special made for the ps3 and pc. So they might changed it sixaxis in the controller itself.

But I think the sixaxis is build in the controller itself and cannot be changed. I'm not sure though

If I'm looking at that correctly, everything is angled to the right...(forward/back are not straight nor is left/right)?

That's a bit odd.

Only thing I can recommend is to either try to get it as close as possible or use a 360 pad.

No, just the margins for up/down/left/right are very small. I almost always move diagonally.

Weird, I always assumed it was an even spacing like the PS2/xbox/gamecube controllers were.

I wonder why they did that.

I seem to have fixed the problem. I switched my pad profile to X360 emulator and use the Xbox preset in games that support it. Fable 3 time ;).
