Sounds like you're not an OP in an MP server.

Try moving 25+ blocks away from the spawn and try.

Ah. Well that's a bit of a pickle then.

I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but have you tried HOLDING down the LEFT mouse button, with the crosshair (The thing in the middle of the screen) over grass or dirt? I only ask because you're new, and some people don't realise this kind of thing instantly.

Just checking, some people don't know.

Instead of force updating, try going to the actual .minecraft folder, and delete everything in it. Back up anything you want to keep, but try again with a 100% clean minecraft.

Do you see the break animation?
Can you hear the breaking noise?

Go into options and make sure you have "Attack" bound to mouse 1, or whatever button you prefer, and use that button to break blocks.

Also make sure your mouse isn't cutting out all together, try pulling a bow back and see if you can hold it or not.

(Oh and make sure your mouse is plugged the whole way in ^^)
