A role-playing game (RPG) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Players take responsibility for acting out these roles within a narrative, either through literal acting, or through a process of structured decision-making or character development.[1] Actions taken within the game succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines

Put it that way sounds like almost every game is an RPG of some sort. We play the role of Steve, who can either thrive or die in a world of cubes that we can bind to our will, or it can destroy us while trying. But formerly, RPG applys to a specific set of games, like Chrono Trigger with stats and levels, basically math being the primary dictator of how you can play the game. Minecraft is nothing like that.
Damn, every game is a fantasy rpg...

An RPG must include elves and dwarves.  The dwarves must have Scottish accents for some reason.  The elves must use bows/arrows.   No, they can't use crossbows silly.  They're elves for god's sake!  Oh, and evil people have really bad complexion for some reason.

wikipedia is wrong, and is also referring to Dungeons and Dragons, a game that is heavily relied upon your imagination. By it's definition, every game is an RPG. Halo is an RPG appearently. Gears of War, God of War, Half-life, Call of Duty, Battlefield; Bad company, and many other games should be classified as an RPG by that definition.

Yeesh, GTA is technically an RPG.  People getting all worked up about Minecraft becoming an RPG seem to really just be expressing their distaste for FANTASY settings.  Big difference.

A more relevant definition:

Role-playing video games (commonly referred to as role-playing games or RPGs) is a video game genre with origins in pen-and-paper role-playing games[1] such as Dungeons & Dragons, using much of the same terminology, settings and game mechanics. The player in RPGs controls one character, or several adventuring party members, fulfilling one or many quests. The major similarities with pen-and-paper games involve developed story-telling and narrative elements, player character development, complexity, as well as replayability and immersion. Electronic medium removes the necessity for a gamemaster and increases combat resolution speed. RPGs have evolved from simple text-based console-window games into visually rich 3D experiences.

This definition is specific to video games.

When people say Minecraft is turning into a rpg, they really mean a fantasy game and are getting their genres mixed up.

Hasn't it always been a fantasy game? With zombies and skeletons and hell and creepers...not sure if the last one counts but whatever point is it's always been a fantasy. In fact, aren't all games fantasy? Where what you're doing isn't real but a thought or dream kind of? Damn, every game is a fantasy rpg...

You're right, sorry.  People are getting worked up about Minecraft becoming HIGH FANTASY.  And you're right about Minecraft having high fantasy elements for a long time.  Just lots of people liked to use modern texture packs, industrial mods, and build huge skyscraper-filled cities in an effort to make the game decidedly less high fantasy.  Those are most likely the people most upset.

Fantasy games have certain elements (magic, for example) that make them fantasy. Sci-fi games will have more futuristic technology, and games that are more realistic to our current timeframe may be considered a sort of "realistic fiction" genre.

Traditionally and game terminology wise, yes. Literally speaking, a fantasy is a myth or imaginative story, making all games (pretty much) a fantasy of some kind.

Seriously. These "Achievement Get!" signatures were never funny, or interesting.

To me that seems like the story should seem implausible when held up to modern knowledge (a tall tale of sorts.) The definition is open for interpretation, but some games are definitely closer to reality than others.
