L-OS! my home-made operating system and computer! with videos!

so, I was sitting in my room last weekend and thought about just how bad mac OS"X" is, the useual. of course, I have built 2 computers in minecraft at the time so i thought, I can do better, what if I make my own?

came up with THIS:

awesome, isn't it?
in apps like grapher and timer, those pixels at the bottom right was because I was out of RAM. so the thing decided to use RAM currently in use to store all the pixels to to display to store that little bit of data. in binary, of course, ald so you have what is called a data clash. luckily, it is not THAT severe, severe cases is when the whole thing crashes because it cannot divide by 0, for example.

so yea, I am planning to make custom boards for this thing and upgrade the hardware and software (of course hardware will cost money) and it will eventually be able to run letter (my basic version of word), display images (already have the format planned), play games (terraria black-n-white, ZELDA!) and play music (gameboy music), all from an SD card, possibly WAY more.

I hope you like this example of severe nerd-ness!
EDIT: here are future plans!

EDIT 2:
I know this thread has not had attention in a while, but that is apparently no reason to let it die!
OK, I have now released the documents. the reason I am doing this is to see if I will get comments like "why can the thing not do X, it is a very important feature" so I can add them to the plan. I do think I have thought it out well, and it looks like everything is planned. feel free to make eany questions, I will do my best to answer them.

the document shows:
  • the file tree for applications
  • show how folders will be detected and how the OS manages files
  • the different file formats (I invented meany different formats for images and such)
  • show how multitasking
  • prove that I am serious about this (no troll writes 2500 words)
of course, here is the file: http://www.mediafire...akjb6rsbaack5m2 (mediafire)
I will probably copy this to the main page as well. it is.
ANOTHER EDIT: parts have arrived! unboxing video and the MEGA running L-OS up!
YET ANOTHER EDIT: there are way to meany of these videos now, please use the youtube playlist: http://www.youtube.c...feature=mh_lolz however, the most recent video(s) will be posted here:

the file manager is being made, I am having some problems with it,though (see page 3 of this thread) but I will get it working eventualy!

arduino UNO, and arduino IDE for coding in C/processing.

however, I am upgrading to the MEGA because I am completely out of RAM and almost out of program space. until then, development is basically frozen.

Finally, after so many disappointing "I made my own OS!" topics here, there's someone who actually made one. Very cool! Can't wait to see what you'll be able to do with the MEGA. :)

Admit it... you placed a dissambled PC in front of a TV wich was running a fake O.S. done in Batch...

Nah, just joking :P

Impressive... did you programmed it or It's all hardware ?

This looks good to me because this isn't one of THESE posts.

But yes, you are doing well. I wish I had that much free time.

Is this actually an operating system or is it just a large Arduino program?

If it is an OS, I challenge you to convert it into a Real-Time Operating System for bonus points.

Wait for the Raspberry Pi IMO.

1080p playback and it's only $25.

When will the device be available to purchase?
We anticipate the device will be available to the general public later in 2011 – at the moment that looks like November.

From their FAQ page.

I know nothing about this but... Could you ever try to make this on ordinary computers? It would be overkill to have it as it wouldnt run so much cpu and ram like windows does?

I guess not but is there an OS already out that runs no memory usuage compared to windows?

Many linux distros are low power/low RAM/low CPU, and look similar to 7, if that's what you're asking.

I whud use quotes, but theere are too many!
No, not a kit. The only kit was the 300 in 1 electronics thing, but the manual said nothing about the circut I needed, so I built it myself. Trust me.
Well, some is hardware, most is software. At least untill I add more stuff.
Running on a real PC is way to hard. The OS has to worry about fan speeds, drivers, battery, drivers, o so many drivers......
Well, it is both a large arduino program and an OS. That is what real operating systems are too, programs witch execute simpler programs in ther own format.

I know there are many 1 board computers out there, but building 1 yourself is mutch more fun.
Check out roboard, or something. With the VGA addon, it can run windows XP. Without it it still can, but it will act like a server needing teamviewer to see the screen.
