Terra Nova Mod


Hello people, I've had this idea for a mod since I watched the first episode of Terra Nova (Click here if you've never heard of it), and the idea is to create a mod that replicates the environments shown in the series. Honestly, as soon as I saw the huge mountains and jungles, I instantly thought "This would make a great mod in Minecraft." And I've decided I'd like to follow up on that idea.

So, if you'd like more information, here we are!

Differences to the Normal World

  • Riptonicite Ore generates in the world
  • Riptonic Blocks can be used to make the 'Time Rip' (Portal)
  • Fossils (?)

Also, one feature that may be stupid, but would fit the TV show: Earth is dying, and so you have about Five days or so to leave to the Terra Nova dimension. Leave your thoughts on this!

The Terra Nova Dimension

  • Dinosaurs
  • New type of grass and dirt (richer and greener)
  • Crazy terrain generation (Check below for reference images)
  • Meteoric Gold, Iron and Diamond (More powerful than Ore forms)
  • New food items
  • Volcanic Biome (?)
  • Jungles full of tall trees and leaves (bushes), use a Machete to cut through easily.
  • New Ores
  • Sixer Mob (Aggressive Human mob) - Personally don't like this one, but others might.
  • Blocks to create a boundary (stops larger dinosaurs from breaking into your town, etc)


I'll add on to this list once I think of more ideas.

Now, to be quite honest, I'm fairly new to Java, I have been working on a mod though: Lunacraft (Click for topic) which is ready for a release, I just need to wait until 1.9 since ShockAhPI is broken for 1.8, and that's the main API behind the mod. So once I make a first release of Lunacraft, then I'll want to work on this mod.

HOWEVER, I'm not so good with some things in modding (terrain generation, model making, sound effects, etc) I can make blocks and items pretty well, as long as they aren't too complicated. So what I need is perhaps a small team to help, a modeller, experienced coder and sound artist would be perfect. A graphical artist for textures would be alright too, I'm OK at making textures though.

Anyway, please tell me what you think of this idea, and if interested, either post here or send me a message. Also, vote in the poll!

This is my girlfriends and I favorite TV Show haha, I think this would be great, but I think you should start the mod slow, and add new features of Terra Nova into the mod over time, so that the mod isn't full of bugs on it's first release. Perfect a few features at first, release, and then perfect a few new features, release, etc. Or you can include pre-releases like Mojang is doing, so that the full release will be complete and bugless.

Of course it's your mod and I'm not a computer wiz at all :)

Also: Include the virus (if possible) that was in the most recent episode, it was a type of amnesia thing, so in game, it could be interpreted to be something that drains your heart meter and you walk really slow.. eh.

You should also include the nests that those bird creatures laid under the settlement, and every now and then those bird mobs would come back, dig up the blocks, and hatch the babies.

EDIT: IN the new world, you should make it much harder to live, seeing as in Terra Nova, the modern world was practically un-inhabitable, so include a more gray sky, and polluted air, which makes your hunger drain faster, and your health will drain without the need of an empty hunger bar.

Very nice mod...I really hope into getting this once it comes out!
Also mabye add the sixers Jeeps?
And as the episodes go on add new dinosaurs...

Btw i was thinking about that today in my biology and geology class lol, but not a mod, like add something like u said, to make a portal to the past, like 200 000 000 years ago, like nether, we go there with a portal, but this will be diferente, with Dinosaurs, that big ones , idk the name, and a Trex lol, it would be AWESOME

that will change the minecraft to a awesome game

Ah, thanks for the positive feedback! I've started very basic development on a 1.7.3 jar, which I'll update when 1.9 is out, I don't think I'll do any terrain gen for now, haha. Anyway, I like the idea of the disease being around, but how and where would you catch it? And also I reckon I'll add the bird things at one point, but they'll have random spawning grounds, instead of underneath your shelter (unless you build on their spawn grounds, haha.), but also, I really think Earth should be dying, but it depends on what more people think, it'd be awesome though, to suddenly reach Terra Nova from a polluted world.

Erm, I was thinking about the jeeps, but to be honest, I'll need to know whether anyone else wants jeeps in it, as well as other technological items like the Sonic Cannons seen in the first or second episode, or even just guns in general. Leave feedback on this guys, since it's a might or a might not at the moment.

I think the disease should be in the biomes with those large trees, the ones that have logs lost amongst all the leaves, making them incredibly irritating to cut down :P And we catch them simply by walking in a certain section of that biome, the cure should be a certain dye or something because I don't remember the cure from the movie. I think it was mucus or something, something produced by a cold.

The birds should have their spawning grounds in all biomes except a snow biome, and they should be underground, so players won't know they are there until the birds come back to hatch the eggs.

And yeah, I think there should be a few Minecraft weeks before your health starts draining automatically in the real world, and with the given time of a few MC weeks, you have to collect certain ores and then use a level/button to activate the portal.
I think Redstone should be used in one way or the other, considering the portal was pretty futuristic and high-tech, why not? :P Not extensive Redstone, though. Maybe the portal be surrounded with Redstone and then a path of Redstone lead to a lever/button, and with the flick/push of that, the portal turns on.

Looks pretty exciting
i was thinking maybe not a mod, but maybe more of a texture pack, like really wild and jungly looking minecraft.
But cant wait if the mod is released!

Hmm, maybe. My idea is that dinosaur (the one that was chewing on the cables) could be a carrier of the disease, and should have a chance to pass it to the player. But I dunno, haha. As with the portal, to begin with it'll be a normal portal like the Nether portal, but made out of Riptonic Blocks, perhaps I'll add redstone support later on!

Okay, so I managed to make a new dimension (I'm modding 1.7.3 since 1.8 SAPI is broken), and it generates a new type of grass and 'Terradirt' instead of the originals, not much difference except texturing really. My main issue is making realistic jungles, since I plan on adding the Machete to cut through thick jungle foilage, etc. Anyway, I'll try to keep you guys up to date as much as I can, and please, if you're any good at modelling, tell me! We need dinosaurs!

I think you should keep the disease random just until the series shows us what the actual cause is.. just an opinion :)
And I believe is called the Canrautourus, and if you're talking about the vegie dinosaur, that'd be the Brachiosaur.

Yeah I can't say anything regarding coding, I don't have a clue about anything regarding that :P
The Terrain should be like, all swamps and customized jungles to fit the series IMO

Also: According to the Terra Nova website, the raptor like dino's that are in the jungles (the ones that attacked the sixers while the kids were screwing around - first/second episode) they are called Nicoraptors, and the birds that had a nest under the ground Terra Nova was built on, is called Pterosaur, just some info :)

Carnotaurus, I think, haha. Speaking of which, the Carno is the first dinosaur I plan to add, and I plan to do that soon, so we have something to show. And I'll be speaking to some people about jungle code, since it's pretty complex stuff. The world the game is currently generating would be perfect with trees all over it, it's very mountainous all over, with valleys here and there. I THINK I know how to make the world look polluted (not Terra Nova), and I'll test that soon.

Great, are you planning on including Terra Nova and the (so far) discovered locations of the world?
Such as the spot where the kids drank moon juice (or something like that), there were caves with markings, there should be canopies in the roof (where the sixers remain hidden from Terra Nova), and the main entry where the portal is with all the paths and what not

Just some ideas - hope that's not too much of a handful to consider in future updates :)

I can understand that this would be a brilliant addition, but I honestly don't know how possible it is, due to the base generator under Minecraft's engine, as it's random and infinite. At the moment, that's a no, I'm afraid :/ but you never know what could happen in future updates!

In addition, you'll be able to craft your own Terra Nova, with new blocks that I'm adding, such as the Colony Fence, The materials used in the houses and possibly the Sonic Turret things on the walls. I'll be working on these soon. Also, the markings will be included, though they'll generate randomly, and for now, will have no real use.

oh damn. :) just had the thought earlier today of trying to make a terra nova mod, and I find that somebody beat me to it. great minds, eh? good luck man.

Okay, I'm going to give up on the terrain generator for now and focus on new items/blocks. I'll probably work a little bit on the terrain gen still, so don't worry!

I'll be adding the portal in soon, and I'll begin posting screenshot's once content is added.
