1/512th sounds small. If you split one block into 8x8x8 thats 512 little blocks.

(all images created using Google Sketchup & Paint.Net)

one could craft these blocks using a Chisel, other materials such as Obsidian requiring Chisels of Superior material.

Once you have these "small" blocks ("Craft Blocks" could be a good name) you can right click on a block to enter the close up building mode, where you place these smaller blocks.

In this editing mode, you can fly, holding shift to move faster. And you will be able to place your small blocks.

On breaking a block where small blocks are placed, all the small blocks are destroyed and returned to the player's inventory.
To edit a small block creation, one can simply right-click on the block again while holding small blocks of any material.

It would be a great addition to the game, as it would allow you to add detail to your houses/creations.
The idea came to me from another mod i saw called Redpower, which as well as adding a MUCH better alternative to redstone, it also lets you place little different blocks. Even though this is great, it still doesn't give a much freedom as this would.

Like my idea? are a modder? message me :)
cos i have no clue :)

You look stupid.
No but seriously what is wrong with the idea? It allows infinite creativity for decorative purposes.

There's already a mod similar to this, the Eight Block mod. http://www.minecraft...-eighth-blocks/ Unfortunately, it isn't updated.

RedPower lets you do this with 8 blocks in the same cube, and lets you make blocks in sizes down to 1/512, plus some other shapes.

But actually placing 512 blocks inside one has some memory and performance concerns. Which is to say, it would use a lot of RAM if you built anything big out of them (64 blocks are worth a full chunk's worth) and generate a lot of visible faces (the worst case would have 768 visible faces in a single cube, more than several whole chunks). It wouldn't take many of those to cause crippling lag even for the fastest computer.

Good to know, thank you for the response.

A combination of Google Sketchup and Paint.Net. Both free software on the internet :)

I wouldn't recommend going so small (no matter how complex a design you'd be able to make), for the reasons stated by Eloraam. However, with a larger cube size, you could still craft some sizable materials.

I wonder if this mightn't be better as a separate utility, where you make a single object, save it, and get it ported to a Minecraft mod that you can then install to the game? You'd have to create some sort of recipe in order to make it, but it'd work just like certain other non-block items in the game, such as saplings, flowers, and (eventually, I hope) tables and chairs.

You could only have a certain number of these items before you'd run out of space, but you'd be free to make them however you like. Only, I'm not sure on the code limitations of things that aren't inherently boxes or X's.
