Currently, I have 512MB of DDR2 RAM and I am upgrading. Should I go with 1GB, 1.5GB, or 2GB. The only thing this computer is ever used for is internet, and Minecraft.

Wow, and I thought my computer was bad...
2GB is basicly minimum, get DDR3 RAM, it's more common, faster and cheaper (I thik it's cheaper, I heard architecture or whatever works better, so it is easy to produce).

@person above me, no, exploring doesn't increase the RAM that MC uses, it only increases the backing store (Hard Drive) memory used. The chunks that are generated are saved in the Minecraft AppData folders and chunks in your vicinity are loaded into the RAM.

I think 400+ MB or something like that..
I have a 4GB at the moment on my main computer and runs pretty good.
So just get 1GB+ Ram and you should be pretty good.

I generally stay in a 500 block radius. DDR3 isn't an option it's DDR2 @ either 400MHz or 533MHz

Two more questions:

1. Should I buy 2 x 256MB or 1 x 512MB if I want a total of 1GB?

2. If I buy RAM with a higher data transfer rate, since PC2-6400 & 8500 are backwords compatible, will my computer bump it back down to 533MHz or will it just not work?

You'll want 2x 512MB.
1GB = 1024MB

I know I already have 512MB (2 x 256MB) and I want 1GB so should I go 4x 256 or 2 x 256 + 1 x 512 because I heard it will be slightly faster if you get more of the same module.

Wait, what OS are you running?

You should aim for at least 2gb unless you are using Linux (or at least, a light-weight Linux distro).

XP uses less memory than Vista/Win7, but even still 1GB is a very small amount of memory. I would recommend going for 2GB if you can. If you have 4 slots and have 2 x 256mb modules installed you could add 2x1GB to your spare slots which would give you 2.5GB in total. Remember that all modules will run at the speed of the slowest one, so if you currently have 400mhz modules you should either buy the same speed or buy 533mhz modules and remove the old ones (I'm not sure how much you would notice the difference in performance from 400mhz-533mhz, both are very slow by modern standards :)).

EDIT: actually there doesn't seem to be a price difference between 400 & 533mhz DDR" sticks, so you may as well get the faster ones.

Can you get information on your motherboard or computer? So we can reccomend good RAM...

Higher RAM the better, don't low-ball this stuff. 2 GB is stretching it even at that.

If you can get 4 GB or even more, you're golden. (Sadly, I run on Vista so that's just my experience.)

You can get 4GB for about $40-50 but i would be more concerned with the graphics card if your having poor performance but with that board you don't have much options.

Wow, is it even still possible to buy something as low as 512 mb of RAM?

OT: Just get the 4GB, it isn't that expensive anymore nowadays.
2GB is the minimum, don't go for anything below that.

Well you should not really go below 2GB nowdays like people say. But i guess 1GB is enough for the internet/Minecraft.

I'm running Win 7 with 2GB of RAM, if I'm not running Fancy graphics with the water shader mod I get about 25-40FPS. My sister has a Mint netbook with 1GB of RAM, it's playable but only on low fog settings - this obviously means 1GB is a no-go on Windows. I'd recommend getting 4GB if you can, though. And try and go for the least amount of individual RAM cards so you have more slots for further upgrading, as long as it's the same brand/model it should be fine. I'd just get a 1GB card, and if you have room maybe another, and if you have money replace your two 256's with 1GB's. 4GB is ideal for Minecraft, but 2GB works.

It's a different story if you want to run a server on your own box. 3GB is the minimum for a half-decent server.

I'd suggest getting a new computer, really. DDR2 memory is starting to go up in price quite a bit (similar how DDR went up after DDR2 was the standard for a while) and pouring money into a hunk of junk is never a good idea.

But if you really have no other choice get 2GB. You don't need 4GB, or rather, you couldn't handle 4GB worth of programs with the processor you're using.
