Exciting news everyone
After a few hours work, i have created a VASTLY improved version
3.0 of the farm brings much easier expandability and identical redstone circuits
this new design is capable of yielding over 600 wheat per harvest
A few things to note:
- DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES
*-*activate the harvester tide while the crop wetters are active, as it may cause the machine to self destruct
-to operate the machine, first turn off the wetter, the switch on the left
-ensure that the two water columns have COMPLETELY disappeared
-turn the switch on the right on, and wait until all wheat has pooled at the bottom
-turn off the harvester switch, ensuring all water from the harvest has disappeared
-re-activate wetter, and replant seeds
KNOWN ISSUES
------------
wheat and seeds may pop out and get stuck on the sides of the system, easy fix
after trying for many hours to get both the harvester and the wetter on the same system, i decided it would be easier to keep them both on seperate systems
it will reign between 200-300 pieces of wheat in a single harvest

ORIGINAL DESIGN
IMAGE REMOVED
using redstone and pistons, i have created an auto harvesting, multi=level, easily expandable wheat farm
in its current state it only gathers 1 stack of wheat, but thats because i made it 3 wide as a test
theoretically it could be extended an infinite distance horizontally and 18-20 levels of wheat from sky to bedrock
IMAGE REMOVED
i use water running to the EDGE of a level, then the wheat drops down into the next levels water flow
That's cool. It's hard to be innovative in wheat farm design, I think.
Personally never thought of stacking the levels like that. It's a good way to keep it from becoming really, really, really long.
What about replanting? Do you have to trample over the farmland to replant, forcing you to retill?
My style is to add a lip to the sides of the farm that you can stand on, 1 block above the level of the wheat. Underneath it you can have flowing water, so the wheat will be irrigated (obvs this will require making the walls wider). Then, you put in some glass, one block above the lip and one block in (I like to use panes on the edges) so you can replant the entire farm without any danger of falling into it.

Do note, sneaking on tilled soil will not destroy it.
the only issue is that watering the fields from underneath while it works (i've done tests) it doesnt work reliably or even all the time
Have a vertical water column going down from the side. Such a column will water all fields in a 9x9 grid around it.

I'm still looking for more feedback on my configurable Redstone Gate mod. All gates and common circuits (such as e.g. clocks, edge detectors, latches and Flip-Flops) in a single block.
Water-harvesting: Does it produce enough seeds for replanting?
It produces a surplus.

here is the schematic for the wheat machine pictured
i am working on an updated version that doesnt have the water issues using redstone but it is extremely finicky and i may just revert the water back to the one in this schematic
if the farm was wider, i would have brick paths and ladders to aid in seeding
The other day, I discovered in the source code that wheat grows fastest when planted in straight single rows. If your rows are more than one wide, it cuts the growth rate in half.
Also, it will grow 3x faster if the farm block is surrounded by 8 other farm blocks. And they should all be watered.

You might want to move the path in the middle to the outer sides (i.e. an 8-wide patch). As crop growth depends on how wheat is surrounded by other wheat.
Optimal growth is achieved when wheat is either completely surrounded by other wheat or when it has wheat on only two opposite sides. As such, the growth of the rows of wheat directly next to the path is needlessly stunted.
Or you don't give a damn, since you don't harvest it that frequently anyway :wink.gif:
[edit]Whoops, I now see this was already mentioned. Sorry for the redundancy[/edit]

but that means that we grow so little wheat its barely worth it
I'm working on an upgraded model right now that should keep the fields watered
No, you can put them side-by-side as long as they are in a straight line. So, single rows with an empty farm block between is optimal:
fffffffff
fcccccccf
fffffffff
fcccccccf
fffffffff
The actual algorithm goes like this:
start with 1
if the block under the crops is farmland, add 1 if it's dry or 3 if it's wet
for each of the 8 surrounding blocks that are also farmland, add 0.25 if dry or 0.75 if wet
if there are more crops planted diagonally or in two perpendicular directions, divide by 2
round down to an integer
So if every block has crops, you will get the wheat at the same rate as alternating rows, but you will have to wait twice as long between harvests. Maybe that is preferable.

In fairness, i'm getting 100 bits of bread per harvest on a good day :tongue.gif:
i could do this, but it would yield a substantially smaller crop
Perhaps i shall experiment after i've finished this one
working on a bedrock to sky farm just to see if it's possible :biggrin.gif:
Exciting news everyone
After a few hours work, i have created a VASTLY improved version

Version 3.1 of my wheat farm now brings a feasible seeding strategy in the form of a central ladder with doors!

normally i'd have a brick path coming through that i could walk on
or i would just sneak or use creative :tongue.gif:
i'll get a MCEdit schematic soon
and perhaps a tutorial if i can be bothered
That's cool, but slow

Just FYI.
so
we'd want
|farm|farm|farm|
|farm|crop|farm
|farm|farm|farm|
|farm|farm|farm|
|farm|crop|farm
|farm|farm|farm|
ideally
but that means that we grow so little wheat its barely worth it
