RaW is a new type of Minecraft game mode that focuses on competitive gameplay between two teams (sizes of 3-6 people per team) on a realm the size of a map or smaller (within the confines of map_0). The two teams compete against each other completing goals such as building fortresses, creating farms, gathering resources, building their trophy room, etc. Each team will basically set-up their own base and fortify and gather resources as they would normally in a cooperative survival setting. Yet the difference between RaW and SMP is that the entire time they are doing this, they will have to be vigilant for the enemy team.
The two teams will be at constant War, meaning that members of opposing teams are kill on sight and sieging of the enemy bases is allowed. A setup will be pre-explained to configure plugins to make this work properly and fairly. This kind of gameplay encourages teams to stick together to accomplish tasks and ultimately opens a new style of gameplay (pvp and sieging). By using the Factions plugin each team can protect their base from the enemy's pickaxes. Yet the enemy can still invade your base by using TNT cannons and other sneaky methods (creeper kiting). And if you think that compromises your own base, don't worry! There are methods to protect your base against these attacks (and will be fully explained below to give everyone equal starting knowledge, think of it as a game manual!)
The maps will be custom edited to provide natural boundaries (a large ocean surrounding a large island), customized caverns (huge spheres deep within the ground with many diamond deposits), abandoned villages (for misc. items), and more. Yet don't be alarmed, we do not plan to make the entire map user created. Our goal is to keep the land largely untouched so that the experience is still new and not crafted to send you in any particular direction, but rather we want to add small attractions to give the teams incentives to explore the island. We want to make it valuable to explore the whole island, thus creating more instances for player contact and pvp. Due to the medium map size, this should happen at a fun but not annoying frequency that provides spontaneous battles and fun experience. Remember, our entire game mode is designed for teams of 3-6 people so that this can be hosted on a home server for you and your friends. This combines the pvp experience of a large server and the social experience of having a small home server (of 6-12 people total).
And see that icon up top? The one that says "Community Project"? We want this to be an open project with input from everyone. Including customized rules, guidelines, plugin suggestions, and maps (so that server admins can just pick from the available options and go with minimal setup). We will setup a template on how to post your customized maps so that you can manage and gain popularity from your maps while still participating in the RaW project. Because with more help comes more content, and we want to give the user as many options as we can give them!

This is a work in progress but we will release our first Alpha map for testing very soon. We will also elaborate on this project and setup the general structure as well so you guys can start playing and creating off the bat!
9/29/11 Made some progress with Alpha Map. I made a few images for the Map Submission guide and plan to get that out tomorrow if all goes well. Once I get that out, I will set it up so that everyone can submit their custom maps. I'm personally terrible with MC Edit and I would love to see what you guys create.
If you wish to get started now, basically find a good seed with a good large island that fits within the confines of a map (mine is map_0)
Then block off the edges with ocean (make sea level to bedrock all water and then sea level to sky air). While your in MC Edit, feel free to create awesome cliffs or whatever you wish. Just be sure to keep the environment natural (this is a suggestion, your obviously free to edit as you wish but keep it natural if you want to maintain RaW status quo) Then go into single player edit and start adding attractions such as small ruins and small villages.
Once you finish this, hold on to your custom realm. I will shortly be listing guidelines on how to make your post (yes you will be making a thread post, but we desire for you to use our guidelines (which are coming) in order to maintain consistency).
In order to properly play RaW you must have the following plugins installed. MCMMO Factions
And preferably everyone uses the Spout client. This helps to reduce lag and allow a more customized server.
Want to submit a realm? Please format similarly to "Alpha" map submission. Code below.

This is our first map used for testing the RaW experience. It may not be perfect, but we want to get the gameplay out as fast as possible. It is a small island with small ruins and houses to add some reason to explore the island. Players may setup base wherever they choose too although we suggest opposite sides of the map. Please stay within the borders of the map.

Alpha map is out! We still have to add some instructions for server setup, but server admins who wish to start right away can use Alpha map. If your curious what plugins to use, we like the combination of Factions, MCMMO, and Jobs. We are using all of these with the Spout client as well.
We'll post more about setting these up to the server to get the RaW experience but server admins who want to do this right away can start now if they can do it on their own.
What we need. I still need to pretty up this forum post, but what I really need is some more maps! If anyone is good with MCEdit and enjoys creating maps, we need you! Seriously, send me a PM or just comment on this thread and I'll help you anyway you need it.
I have an idea, someone needs to make official team skins so you can easily distinguish who's on who's team.
That would be a great idea. Currently, on our server which were testing things out, we're using variations of an Orc skin so that were all orcs. It's kinda funny.
But also regarding originality, I'm not trying to be the first to do this, but rather the first to try and bring this thing together into a single project. I don't want this to be solely my creation, I want everyone to feel free to contribute there variations and maps so that we can expand this project. That's why I set it up so that people who create maps can start up their own thread, so they can generate feedback and moderate their map independently without my interference.
I've been quite busy recently but once some time frees up I'm going to renovate this thread aesthetically. I just finished a promo-video showing off some clips when we did this on our old 1.7.3 server (same setup just not official RaW at the time).
