How exactly would one go back to older minecraft versions, like 1.7.3

You can't unless you saved the minecraft.jar.

Since redistributing the Minecraft jar breaks Minecraft's Terms of Use and so also breaks our forum's policy, you'll either need to have kept a backup of the previous version's Minecraft.jar you want to downgrade to, or you can use MCNostalgia to downgrade:

Other than that, there's no other legal way to downgrade as far as I'm aware.

Alright thanks, I have downgraded, but it doesnt appear to be able to be modded? Is it?
