Build to the top or dig to the bottom, then count.

without using any add ons: dig down and count up.  there are a few applications out there that can tell you your current (X,Y,Z) coordinates in relation to the (0,0,0) block.  Ive only ever used one application to locate the 0 chunk on my main save.  I used minecraft GPS and found it in less than 2 minutes.

remember: there are 4 levels of admin.  once the pure stone/dirt level starts on top of this is considered block 5.  youll be able to see admin blocks of level 4 on the floor.

There are actually 5 layers of admin blocks.

Make a staircase shaft until you see the 5th layer of bedrock, and create signs marking each layer (counting the 5th bedrock layer at Layer 0, then work your way up.
