General Tips

-If you don't know what to build, pull up some images from google to inspire you. Posted Image

-Texture Packs to your liking can improve the way things look a lot! My personal favorite Posted Image Summerfields.

-Remember, you don't have to go for realism, let your imagination run wild onto Minecraft.

-Minecraft is YOUR world, do anything you want, you have everything you need, the tools and the materials, do anything you dream of.

-There aren't any physics in Minecraft, so don't hold back when building your creations!

-Planning out your build makes it really easy and well put together in the end.

-The "Golden" Ratio.

-Symmetry can help make your creations look more neat and tidy but not everything has to be symmetrical.

-It's easier if you know how or what you want to build so try and choose a theme to build around, like Defense, Luxury, Modern, Futuristic, Med-evil, ect.

-Before you start building know which blocks you will use, create a palette of blocks to build with as an artist chooses the paint they paint with. You should generally use about 3-5 blocks for the majority of the design.

-Despite Minecraft being a game of blocks, you can also build many different shapes.

-Location adds atmosphere, a wooden lodge just doesn't fit in a desert.

-If you make structures more than 1 block thick you can make a different interior material and also use a different exterior.

-You can use anything to build! Crafting benches, furnaces, even cake!

-Use blocks in any way possible, slabs can create windows, stairs can make chairs.

-Max out your space, bigger is better.

-Remember, your structure looks smaller from the inside.

-Exterior lighting is just as important as interior lighting.

-Diagonal builds and curves contrast the blockiness of Minecraft, its a neat effect!

Aesthetics (Touching up)

-Switch up your materials!

-Add in little details like flowers or trees, touch things up a bit.

-Put glowstone behind your paintings. They are translucent and appear much brighter and more vivid with glowstone behind them.

-Add frames around your windows. For example, if your walls are made of Planks, use raw wood to outline the windows.

-Use different materials to make patterns!

Interior Design

-A whole thread on interior design!

I add flowerbeds to stuff. Makes it look better.

This is a hard forum to talk about minecraft architecture in my opinion. Most people here are survival players that live in wooden shacks or underground, most don't even care about architecture. Yet the few that do care are quite good. I've seen some rare examples of great architecture, most of them were from the Voxel Box (a server), which is in my opinion one of the only servers where real architecture in minecraft. They care more about detail then any other server and on top of that they care about being unique. It's a great server. As a recently whitelisted member of the server, I have started to care about detail alot more too. I am talking about flower decoration, but also block variaton, 3D addition and unique shapes. A city in tvb called Babiole is my favorite by far and in my eyes it is the perfect example of MC architecture.

One thing is to never use just one material for a building. Use dark and light colors to give the building some contrast, but don't use too many contrasting colors unless you want it to hurt your eyes when you look at it. And in Minecraft, bigger is usually better.

Never build with netherrack, and if you need a fire, just hide it.

And don´t make complex structures round, it´s very hard to get it nice.

I am a survival player yet I tend to be creative by using both my vast knowledge of actitectural design and an infinite imagination. I have built buildings from full sizerd Norse strongholds, to celtic castles, to underground cathedrals, to small-narrow mineshafts and much more. I may play Singleplayer 99% of my minecraft time but I try to be creative and random. My first creation I am looking at recreating in my new world is a rendition of the Denver Public Library (also known as Central Library in the state of Colorado.) I will post pics below of what we are looking at but it is the library I am currently within while posting this.

I really hope this isn't too much in a single post, but this is my idea of arcitecture in minecraft.
My advice to those who wish to talk to me: Do not screw with me, Do not raise my ire, and Do not give me promises you cannot fulfill. Other than that, I am easy going and I will listen and think before I respond.

I've found since 1.8 that gates are excellent shutters for more primitive looking houses. I've made a wooden and log (I think its called a lekman) house on my usual smp server and i draped all the overhangs and stuff with vines, it's a quite nice effect. When I modify and make it stone I want to try and cover the walls in patterns using slabs and half steps. Need to make it stone in case of a fireplace.

@Dante: Of course its okay, I'd love to see it being worked on. I'll post pictures of your progress on the main post.

@an1m9r: I've seen people use trapdoors as window shutters :D

@Smartie: Ever since 1.8 all I've seen is complaints, bugs, and other nonsense forum topics. I wanted an active thread about building instead of all those topics :P

I also play single player a lot because I've got some slow internet :( I'll see if I can upload a few pictures of some building ideas. Maybe an underground bio-dome with a lava sun?

Color and contrast are so important.  I hope Notch implements paint or dye so I can make different colored wood and stone.

There is tons and tons of good suggestions for the game, I wonder how many he actually has thoughts about adding. Colored wood and stone is a good idea, I'm sure there is a mod for it :o

I'm working on an underground place at the moment, pictures soon.

Thanks! The texture pack is called "JohnSmith" I believe, it's only 32x32 and it looks amazing!

The water elevator is faster than ladders, just alternate signs and water. Hold down space and you get an extra boost from jumping out of water right into the next :P
