This is discussed under Q&A, along with several posts by me.
However, I will cover over some of the basic points for you, so there's no need to go digging!
1.) At the time of writing this program has 35,000 downloads, and not one of those people has said anything about having their computer infected.
2.) Only the EXE version has this issue, my best guess is that it's from packaging a JAR inside an EXE.
3.) I've provided several result links from virus scanners (check the Q&A section for those). Norton is the only scanner that doesn't trust it.
If there's any other way I can help put your mind at ease, please tell me.
Also, if you could give me some details about what Norton is actually saying (I refuse to install such a terrible program) I might be able to prevent other people from getting the message.
I downloaded the EXE just to see what Norton says about it. I know a lot of people don't like Norton and it can be paranoid sometimes, but hey.
Anyway, here's what it says:

Which says essentially, that since there haven't been a lot of Norton users downloading this file and reporting it safe, they aren't going to trust it. For people who really want to use the EXE and Norton deletes it, just go to the Norton quarantine area of the application and tell it to restore the file.
Well, I like to have fresh world every time i get bored with the old one (or the old one gets broken by patch). You don't have to fly/run a long distance after you start the world + there still are only 3 strongholds, allways in the circle around [0;0;0] (dunno if pre4 changed that), which would make them hard to get to if I built my base far away from center (but the access is necessary, considering there are portals to the End now)... With different seeds you could find one perfect seed where everything is as you like it and close enough to strongholds and map center... And not everyone wants to use hacks to change their position in save files...
I suppose you could analyse just the one map, but when that would work, the batch thing should be a piece of cake.
It would be advanced, I know, but this project promises to be good tool for ppl, who don't wanna waste time running around but don't want to cheat either. Thats why I thought it would be a nice addition sometime in the future :smile.gif: And tools like cartographers and worldviewers are usually slow or show only already generated and saved chunks - useless for map overview after fresh start.
Well I assume the next patch will make strongholds infinite. (Pre-4 moved the stronghold from 0,0,0 to it's normal spot) But either way, you're right. If I could do it to one map, getting it working on multiple maps would be easy.

I thought I read somehwere that Jeb or Notch mentioned that strongholds will continue to generate in concentric circles around 0,0 the farther out you go?

To tell them how to live is to prevent them living.
And the fact, probably, that the EXE doesn't have a publisher listed or a security certificate, etc

I made a post here, explaining how strongholds work. The only thing that changed this patch was that they removed the bit about setting the first one to 0,0.
As for the EXE, I think you're on to something. Norton may actually be right. You shouldn't trust it. I mean... I wouldn't even trust it. In fact, I have yet to download any of my own EXEs. I'm just some guy with an affinity for coding and an irrational hatred towards the color yellow. Who knows when I might embed a virus to remove the "R" and "G" from "RGB".
...indeed...
They ought to change their slogan. NortonQuarantining the viruses of tomorrow, today.
Norton is the least trustworthy AV program in existence. But hey, it comes pre-installed on most new computers because they pay the manufacturers and they know people are lazy enough to just keep it instead of switching to a better program.

Right, but am I crazy or did I read something that either Notch or Jeb said that they were planning on adding strongholds further out? Kinda makes sense, since once you get beyond the current ring of strongholds, you'll never find another one. I'm pretty sure it was either on the list of planned stuff or a tweet by either of those guys.

Oh they are... Just usually it's on a per chunk basis. Right now, for every chunk, it inputs the chunk x,y, calculates all three strongholds (per chunk) and then outputs whether one of them was on that spot.
Later it'll just do it like everything else does.
I love this little program, but sadly I'm running a 1.8.1 map and I'm trying to find villages, not strongholds. Any way you can give us a version of the program that will find villages for 1.8.1 seeds?
Well done. I checked it against known cartograph renders of our 2 server maps and all 3 strongholds on both check out.
Very helpful for People who Hate Snow Biomes. These snowbirds now have several days to relocate their bases elsewhere. No more bitching about shoveling snow - this map saves time, trouble, and a lot of cutting and pasting.
Also very helpful for People who Don't Like Water/Boats. Since 1.9 pr 4 is turning one entire side of each server's searched area into one gigantic ocean, we can move spawn away from that side so players have more land area to build. Anyone who still wants to play Robo Crusoe may do so, they just have to walk farther.
Can't wait to get crackin' on the Nether. I'm sure everyone will want to race for the nearest Nether Fort and scoop up all the Netherwort for potions. If we know where they are going to be, we can put entrance portals up now and then nuke the old Nether when the update comes out.
OH YEAH one minor issue with the exe. It assumes you are running 32-bit Java. I'm on Win 7 Pro 64 bit and run JRE6 64-bit. For those folks, use the jar.
This is simply a must have tool for me, thank you so much! I am so picky about my maps, I DESPISE large snow biomes, so now I can just increment the seed number or type some in randomly until I find some I like. I also like having the strongholds NOT be in the middle of water. Being able to find out things like this instantly is a godsend.
Suggestion: Whenever I type a number OVER 3000 in the "with a range of" field, it defaults it back down to 3000. Is that intentional because of some coding aspect or a bug? I would really like to be able to make it a tad larger (5000 maybe?). I know I can do it again with a different origin point and stitch the pictures together, but that is a darn lot of work if you're doing it as many times as I do it. =[
Also: I'm running Win 7 Pro x64, and I couldn't get the .exe to do anything. Like a poster a bit above me, the .exe would run fine, but do nothing once a seed was entered and Find! was clicked. The java version works for me, BUT once I put one seed in and click Find!, I have to close and restart the program to search a new one. After completing one search, entering a new seed, and clicking Find!, it clears the Output box and does nothing. Restarting the program and clicking Find! again will work, but I have to restart the program A LOT.
!!!!!!!!!!
OHMYGOD, I know what this program needs! I was just thinking of Sim City on the SNES, and how it has all those pre-generated maps, and you could click through them.... you totally need a "Next" and "Back" button on the Show Map window, so you can easily cycle through seeds until you find one you like. And if you don't know what I'm talking about, take a look at the picture:

I was always under the impression that anyone who knows if their computer is 64, or 32 bit would also know how to open a JAR file. So I never put too much effort into the EXE version. I'm sure I could make a 64bit version if you'd like.

The original reason for the limit was due to a memory leak in the program. Creating anything higher than 3000 would crash the program. However, since that has been fixed I've just avoided changing it. I'm already working on a new version (Although only recently have I had a chance to really start coding it more) with the ability to scroll infinitely.

Yaay this works great a bit off some times but works. but could u make it find mooshroom biomes to? that could be awesome.
It already does. They show up a pinkish color. I'll edit this post with a picture in a minute showing you once I generate a map with one. Keep in mind they are probably the rarest biome, and usually spawn far out in the middle of oceans, but this is not always true. I've used this program so much to map seeds that I can tell you for sure that they do NOT need to spawn by themselves in the water. I've had some on the coast of large landmasses bordered by three other biomes. I'll post pictures of both, but it might take a bit to find one of those.
Okay, images for both. If anybody wanted to know, the seed for the second one is -1009011.
....
Edit: figured out the only image hosts allowed are imgur, cubeupload, and photobucket :/

I could live with something like this. But don't expect it right away. My concern right now is single seeds, and then I'll move onto multiple seeds.
I'm okay with 'eventually', hahaha =]
