POPULAR

+ Now you will be able to speak with the Mojang crew at PAX and MineCon without insulting them. Well, some of them anyway. Posted Image If you verify the pronunciation of any other names at Mojang, or connected to it, then please post them here.

* Here is how Markus Persson (notch) and Jens Bergensten (jeb_) answered the following questions on twitter:

How is Mojang pronounced?

Quote

notch - I say "moe-djang" in English. In Swedish, I say "moyang" with a hard g and emphasis on the a.

How is Persson pronounced?

Quote

notch (Markus Persson) - "Persson" is closer to "passion" than "person" in pronunciation.

How are jeb and Jens pronounced?

Quote

jeb_ (Jens Bergensten) - My nick (jeb) is supposed to be pronouced in English, but my real name (Jens) is more like "yens"

Well that was informative, I didn't realize people made that mistake or bothered discussing them in person.
Games I play: Minesweeper, Terraria and Minecraft!
I don't often follow threads I post in. If you'd like a response about something, send me a PM.

Well, I'm 1/4 Swedish, but I'm also 1/4 Norwegian so I think that causes me some confusion. ;) Either that or it's from not having learned your language yet. :D :P

Moved to Off Topic? So this isn't about or related to Minecraft in any way? Especially with Minecon coming up where people will actually be meeting these people and will want to be able to accurately pronounce their names and such? You know how many threads have been started in "Minecraft Discussion" in the last few months alone where people were asking this very question?

I've never even been to this sub-forum before, the people who would be most interested in this info will never find it here...

There really should be a General Minecraft Tutorial/Info sub-forum since the current Tutorials section is only for specific things and things like this are now being kicked out of "Minecraft Discussion" when they never were before...

Mojang - Moe-Jang
Persson - Purse-son (literally)
Jeb - Jeb.

That's how I say it. The examples given were very horrible. I don't get how Mojang can be pronounced Mo-Djang in english. Other than that, the rest were just confusing as to how Persson sounds like passion. It doesn't even have an 'a' sound in it.

I don't know what to tell you. The information in the OP is directly from Notch & Jeb themselves. But you can feel free to tell them both what you think of what they said via twitter.

It's Swedish, of course it doesn't sound like English. @UndeadNecro pronounce them however you like but don't criticize those who say how to pronounce it correctly.

In Norwegian it would be Persson. Just Persson, with two s's. Swedish is weirder than I thought.

Say "person" like a Scotsman would, with a little whistle in the s, and it will sound a lot like "passion".  Then, you may understand that what he was probably trying to emphasize is that the "e" is not a schwa sound, or relatively silent.
In English, "person" usually sounds like p'rsun.
