Good day, ladies and gents! Today, I bring you a new (albeit, completely useless) way to take down those pesky trees. This contraption will auto detect tree growth and move all of the logs to one central location. At the moment, it's a little useless, but it's fun to watch!
UPDATED as of 8/29/2011
This newest design has gone from useless to ridiculously redundant. :biggrin.gif: I call it The Omega Mill. Capable of storing more logs than you'll ever need!
Enjoy!
OLDER VERSIONS IN SPOILERS
8/26/2011 - I've now designed the chambers to be modular, so they can be interconnected indefinitely. I've also changed the way they process to save on vertical space and lower the cool-down time. The final plans include making a corner module and connecting all of the chambers into a circle, with a massive storage area placed in the center. The new storage design will allow for more than the standard 12X12X12 setup. Check it out!
8/22/2011 - Tree Processor 2.0. I already see where I can majorly improve it. In one week from now, I will begin uploading a tutorial video for version 3.0, and I will do it in an LP fashion. You get to watch along as I design a lumber mill as fast as 1.0, with even more trees than 2.0. Stay tuned, fellas, and thank you for all of your comments thus far! :biggrin.gif:
8/21/2011 - Version 1.42. I've begun expanding the design to accommodate multiple trees. I'd like to thank Darquan for his sand/gravel filtering system, as I'll be using it in the final version.
8/19/2011 - Version 1.2 here. With a little ingenuity and compacting, you could probably have it set up for multiple trees which sends all of the logs to one collection area.
Note - I am definitely not the first person to come up with this idea, but I wanted to clean up the design to show as little redstone as possible. It seems the visible redstone detectors in the storage area are unavoidable, unless someone has an idea for that.
Let me know what you think, and stay tuned for other useless but FUN inventions. Take care!
I made one of these a while ago. I like how you polished your version. It is not useless, they are absolutely awesome to watch :biggrin.gif:
I actually have a version which joins the output streams of two of these together to a shared storage area.
One idea which I haven't realized was to actually have a conveyor belt run from the storage area towards various houses or areas on the server such that people can be on "lumber-duty" and constantly plant trees into multiple of these to replenish more localized lumber storage areas.
Support the Allocator! Find my inventions such as my pressure plate removal detector on the About Me page of my profile.
I'm still looking for more feedback on my configurable Redstone Gate mod. All gates and common circuits (such as e.g. clocks, edge detectors, latches and Flip-Flops) in a single block.
That's pretty slick. I may borrow the log storage area for my cobble generator - 123 with auto-shutoff would be nice. It's currently 12X13X4, with "It jams up and stops working but doesn't break anything" for shutoff.

Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe.
Twitch or nothing? It was nice. Isn't anything going forward.
Arkane. I saw your first prototype of the tree farm on your map. I like that one a lot because it blocks you from putting another tree in until it's done. 2 things that are bad on that one is that the storage floor constantly makes a wave(not bad but it's annoying) and if you just put a normal log into the farm, the sand will get stuck and it will stop. I know it's a prototype but I like it.
I posted some explanations on my version here and here

Nice! =D I'm glad I'm not the first to make this, as it shows I was thinking in the right direction. The lumber duty idea sounds pretty neat too. I intend to make a more compact version that can end up using 16 or more trees at a time, all going to one central storage area. I most likely won't be able to hide the redstone as well this way, but it'll still be amazing! =P

To do an auto shutoff, you could hook up the output of the max capacity alarm to the engine power using an AND gate.

The wave thing was annoying to me as well, which is why the newer version has a sensor before activating the floor. =P
As for the sand getting stuck, the way it currently works is that the sand belt begins to run on its own until a switch is triggered below from the sand falling and piling up. Since you only placed one block instead of growing a tree, that one block is pulled into storage, and only one sand block can fall at a time. They won't pile up quickly enough this way to affect the switch.
I'm working on a new version which will begin pulling the blocks below the dirt block. This will allow the placing of any single, non-gravity affected block.
having some troubles in your level with the fact the sand keeps breaking on the pistons any help?
I'm not sure if processing power comes into play when dealing with the piston timing for the sand belt. If so, the sand might be breaking because the piston retracts and extends too quickly for the sand block to move into position before being pushed. Try adding a repeater to increase the delay.
Me Likey. Only if it were fully auto... BTW with the creators permission i can upload the schematic?

95% of teens would scream if Justin Beiber was about to jump of the top of the Empire State Building. If you are in the 5% that would grab a seat and some popcorn and yell JUMP! JUMP! JUMP! post this into your sig.
Ok it is finished :biggrin.gif: all credit goes to arkanesociety, he created ALL credit, the building and its contents, i simply converted it to a .schematic file. Here is the mediafire download, arkanesociety's Tree Processor v1.2 (8.01kb)

I'll being working on a tutorial soon, so stay tuned.
Add a block eliminator so you can have the wood as items.

Is there a way to do that without mods? I try to make all of my creations build-able in vanilla Minecraft, unless of course, I'm showcasing a mod. =P
As long as I get credit for this particular design (as there are others out there, like Darquan's), then go for it. :biggrin.gif:
