Minecraft needs about 200 MB of disk space.

More like 20mb.

Th reason your .minecraft folder is 200mb is because of your saved worlds, and there's no way to specify how much space they will take up as they're effectively infinite (eg the more you explore the more space they take up).

EDIT:

There's no answer to your question. Mods take up however much space they take up. Different mods are different sizes, and the more you download the more they will take up. Same for texture packs, and the same for your worlds.

Why are you asking anyway? Unless you have a hard-drive from last century you should have no trouble making enough space for Minecraft and a few mods.

Why the obsession with how much space things take up?

It doesn't matter how much space it takes up. You need a decent amount of RAM to run it. Without a Memory cleaner you should have 2 GBs of RAM available to run it.

Java will take up roughly 170 MBs of space to download.

And I was referring to a PC. Just putting Far setting on for a short period of time on my computer sucks up practically all of my memory and I have roughly 800 MBs of available space in my computer from 1.5 GB total. So if you have a max of 1.5 then you will need a memory cleaner to sift out the garbage that the game saves to RAM. If you have 2 GB plus or a fast CPU then it shouldn't be an issue.

If you need a memory cleaner. CyberLat's RAMCleaner works well for me. It's free to use. The trial doesn't stop you from using it after it runs out.

Minecraft takes very very little space,  lets face it, if you need to check your HD space before you download it then you have far greater problems :D

My current Minecraft folder is 195mb and 120+ of that are saved games.
and yes this is mb, not gb.  so no need to worry.
