So far, i have mined about 35 ingots of gold out, and over 40 diamonds.

Is gold rarer than diamond, or am i digging in the wrong place? (I Mine below Level 16)

You're just digging in the wrong place.

Every thing is minecraft is common. Just dig a 10x10x3 hole at level 16 and you'll get about half of the mineral/ore/gem types easily

I noticed the same thing its wierd.  But i believe certain levels are better for certain resources so idk try looking where gold starts compared to Diamonds and dig there I think youll find more.
EDIT: Gold starts at 32 so try digging 12->32 somewhere in there to get more gold

Gold and diamonds have the exact same rarity. The difference is due to chance.

I was wrong

gold is in .11% of rock benath level 32
diamond is in .09% benath level 18

They can be found a bit higher than that, but their density drops

I was basing my inital statement on the ore density graph, an the .02% difference wasn't visible on it.

Gold is slightly more common than diamond, 0.12% for diamond compared to 0.13% for gold.

I suppose diamond is rarer. You might be just digging in the right place, since who needs gold when there's diamond?

The precise numbers are iffy. That link measured it on a sample size, the wiki had its own sample with different numbers, its changed over time...

However, there does not seem to be a significant difference in their density, though gold can be found higher up

Gold is slighty more common than diamond, it is generated 2 times per chunk but in smaller veins, I think.

When I'm exploring caves, I usually get about five times as much gold as diamond.
Gold is not rare at all for me.

The numbers we used were using over 9000 generated chunks, compared to the wiki's 3000, or outdated generation.

Either way, the difference is far smaller than the variance introduced by chance in what you find. For any practical measurement, their density is the same, and finding more of one or the other is pure randomness.

There are certain types of large cave systems that contain a lot of gold. They usually will have very few level 10 lava lakes, and don't reach high enough to get to the surface. Level 14 mines have a higher chance of hitting them than level 12 mines. In one of them I found about 45 gold ore in that one cave. The minus to them is that they don't have many diamonds or lapis lazuli.
