How long after a nuclear apocalypse is this going to happen though?
After six months, most out doors areas are not going to be majorly radioactive. They should actually start dropping down to normal after 1 year.
Water by itself can never become radioactive. Only contaminants in it will make it radioactive. And boiling it would help get rid of the radioactive dirt in it.
Somewhat.
Underwater nuclear tests have proven this. Water absorbs radiation.
All things considered, water is one of the few things that will be resilient to a nuclear apocalypse.
Also, in a few years, farming is possible, it all depends how close to the blast you are.
Rebuilding of civilization is not exactly an impossibility.
Just curious how much real life nuclear apocalypse is this based on, and how much is the sillyness of Fallout 3.

-Can you play on peaceful?
-It would be very hard to collect coal. How can you get it before the apocolypse?
-If you die and the fallout shelter is not directly over the spawn point during the day, do you get a time limit to get back to your shelter? What Penalty is there?
-If your armour still has time left on it, can you decontaminate it?

Realistically speaking, if you haven't built a fallout shelter before the nuclear apocalypse then you will be dead. Giving the player something like a 10 days to prepare would both make this a bit easier and it would allow make some of the difficulties like growing clean grass underground simple to do.
A smart player would try to seal in as much clean resources as possible behind a 3 block thick dome before the 10th day.
This would also make it simpler to make the above ground structures as you would not have to find a way to decontaminate the room when the air trapped inside is clean.
Then it wouldn't be much of a challenge, would it?
Good idea, like the principle. Might have to give it a go on my next save. I was already in the middle of building a base inside a mountain (multiple sets of iron doors, smooth stone on all sides, etc) in my current spot, but I ran out of steam.

Rule 7: You have a 5 day period before this apocalypse where you can prepare. Drops are legal, and the surface world is safe. This SHOULD allow for you to get the supplies needed to be safe when the apocalypse hits. Fair? Good.
Rule 8: Food from contaminated animals is OFF-limits, due to the radiation making it unedible even if severely washed.
Rule 9: Your walls MUST be atleast 3 blocks thick, with smoothstone on the first exterior layer.
Rule 10 (Optional.): Tree's on the outside produce radiated wood, making it impossible for you to harvest their bark, making getting a tree farm early on all the more important......
Hope you like the revisions, not mine once again, hope you enjoy them! Feedback appreciated.
