Mod edit thanks to ShellOnTheBeach: "NOTE: Different server software's, use different symbols before the letters/numbers. It might not always be an &. Experiment with different symbols and you will get it in the end."

I have seen only a couple of servers that have multicolored MOTD's. So, I assume that not many people know how. That is why I am creating this tutorial.

To change MOTD colors, start by opening the server.properties file in your server. After you have done this, go down to the line that starts with "motd=". In front of the words you want to change colors of, put one of the following codes to produce the corresponding color. For purposes of demonstration, I will be using "&a", the code for green. Remember that &a is not the only code you can use. The rest of the color codes are listed below.

In this MOTD, I wrote "&aThis is a multicolored MOTD." Writing "&a" made all the words following the code turn green. Here is a picture of this MOTD:

Now that you understand how it works, here are all the color codes:

&0 produces black text: Posted Image

&1 produces blue text: Posted Image

&2 produces deep green text: Posted Image

&3 produces aqua text: Posted Image

&4 produces deep red text: Posted Image

&5 produces purple text: Posted Image

&6 produces gold text: Posted Image

&7 produces gray text: Posted Image

&8 produces dark gray text: Posted Image

&9 produces light blue text: Posted Image

&a produces green text: Posted Image

&b produces teal text: Posted Image

&c produces red text: Posted Image

&d produces magenta text: Posted Image

&e produces yellow text: Posted Image

&f produces white text, making it pretty much useless.

Using these codes strategically, you can make very pretty MOTD's, like the one on my server:

Thank you for reading my tutorial! Post any questions you have or suggestions for this tutorial.

(By the way, here is the text in my server.properties file, just to give you an idea of what you can do:)

&cHello.&e Build&d something&a fairly&b epic!

You can also color the server name, but it looks bad on the server list.

Oh btw, this should be in server administration. However this post is easier to follow.
I disagree with you, therefore you are wrong.

Bump. I added the rest of the color codes.

And this probably should be stickied, for the sake of MOTD's everywhere.

It should be noted that you do not need a space between the code and the text. Your example says "&e Build.", but the space is unnecessary. Also, &f is not useless. If you have, for example, green text and want to go back to white text, it's anything but useless.

You mean, if you were to write "Hello&ebob" it wouldn't come out as "Hellobob"?

I found this pretty useful. Maybe now people will pay attention to the MOTD when they join.
Read me if you just can't build something

Yes. Although that wasn't exactly what I was trying to say. I'll take your example, again, to show you what I meant (although this is kind of trivial, since in the end it looks the same either way).

This is yours:
&cHello.&e Build&d something&a fairly&b epic!

Writing it like this:
&cHello. &eBuild &dsomething &afairly &bepic!
will give you the same thing. Again, it's trivial, but it looks neater.

Has a mod even seen this yet? This deserves to be stickied just as much as Zuriki's PaperCraft.
