If you're looking to build epic sized constructions in the style of Victorian Science Fiction, ala Steampunk, you just might have found the right texture pack!
Introduction
Spoiler
My intention has always been to make things like grass, stone, cobble, etc. tile well without annoying patterns in the landscape or your creations, unless they're supposed to be man-made patterns like straight runs of cobble, iron girders, etc...at least that's the goal! As such, you should be able to see your flights of fanciful engineering the way you imagined them, within the unlimited, limitations of Minecraft. Have fun, think like a 'megalomaniac' and build an epic world of steel, brass, copper and stone/concrete! Many already have...(see the pics below).
I am now beginning to support Random mobs...so expect to see lots of strange machines and automatons on your travels on land and sea. More will continue to be added as when the fancy takes me.
And when you build, you may be surprised to see that some blocks and items are now animated...working craftbenches, pulsing furnaces, flickering electrical items and marvellous alchemical contraptions.
If all you like doing is adventuring (a most worthy Minecraft occupation) or creating a high Tolkeinesque fantasy world, then you may be better served by other excellent medieval style texture packs. However, if your goal is to dominate the world with Victorian style Steampunk technology and epic retro-science constructions, then join the League of Extraordinary Minecraftians and enter the world of Glimmar's Steampunk.
.....Mwahahahaha!

Spoiler
1. Copy the two lines of code underneath my signature banner.
2. Left-click on the little cog icon in the top right of this page.
3. Once on your 'Profile Page' left-click on the green 'Edit my Profile' button (right hand side).
4. Under 'Profile Settings' on the left-hand side, left-click 'Signature'.
5. If you've never created a signature box before, 'Your current Signature' will be blank. Underneath is the 'Edit Signature' box. Simply paste the two lines of code you copied in step 1. into this box. If the two lines of code still look exactly the same as they appeared on my main page, then left-click the green 'Save Changes' button at the bottom of your 'My Settings' page.
6. If all went well you should see my banner appear under the 'Your current Signature' heading. Now find one of your own posts on the forum (or post in my thread) and you should see my banner underneath your text and in every subsequent post you submit or previously submitted. If something went wrong, try stepping through these instructions again...we all make silly mistakes, and my mistakes are even sillier!
7. Thank you for taking the time to use my banner. I'm very grateful for your support.

As added encouragement for the two years I've been working on this pack, I'd appreciate a click on my little green 'reputation' button at the bottom of this post. Many thanks in advance...now have fun building something epic:
Glimmar's Steampunk v5 for Minecraft 1.2.5

I'm continually working on improving things and adding new material. If you like my work, perhaps consider using my signature or click on my reputation button at the bottom of my OP.

This pack requires the latest version of 'MCPATCHER' MC Patcher link.
Why do you absolutely need MC Patcher?...click the spoiler:
Spoiler
All HD texture packs require MC Patcher to fix graphical glitches and to make use of HD custom animations and new custom terrain animations. Yes, many of the terrain blocks and items in this pack are now animated! Please see the v3.5 changelog below and earlier changelogs.
To repeat- Don't forget to use the latest version of MC Patcher if you want to see all the new animated terrain blocks and items, custom colours and animated lava, water, fire and portal. It is also absolutely necessary to fix things like fire on bricks and gold blocks, water in the nether, compass and more...these glitches are not caused by this pack, but are common to all HD texture packs of greater than 16x pixels!

My current ISP is blocking my access to MediaFire. If the download links below don't suit you, rather than getting frustrated, suggest an alternative file-sharing site that doesn't require signup to download or limit bandwidth and I'll try it out:
ksheep has come to the rescue and is providing a very welcome temporary solution to my MediaFire woes by generously hosting my pack files on his MediaFire account...many thanks, mate.
Also, please note you do not have to register with Rapidshare. Clicking on the middle 'green' button with the downward pointing animated arrow above it, is your prefered choice for a pain free download.

Instructions for Installation and Patching:
Spoiler
1. Ideally (but not necessary), ensure your game is a clean, freshly installed version of Minecraft.
2. Boot up the Minecraft game, select 'Mods and Texture Packs', select 'Open texture pack folder' and just drag 'Glimmar's Steampunk' zip file into it, from where you saved it. Don't forget to select it as your pack of choice.
3. VERY IMPORTANT! To fix graphical glitches inherent in Minecraft when using HD textures (anything with a higher resolution than vanilla Minecraft's 16x pixel blocks) and to see my custom water, lava, fire and portal animations and new custom_terrain and item animations, lighting and biome colour effects, it is essential you apply the latest "MC Patcher" MC Patcher. There are clear instructions in kahr's thread on how to use MC Patcher. However, to see all the nice things in this pack please ensure to tick the following options when you run MC Patcher:
HD Textures
HD Font
Random Mobs
Custom Colors
Better Grass is optional.
4. At the outset...any other mods I recommend are used by you at your own risk. I've used them mostly without any problems at all, but the responsibility is on you to read the relevant mod thread and sensibly back-up your Minecraft 'bin' and 'save' files before making any changes you may later regret.

HD font
Grateful thanks to Nuin for use of his HD font 'Berylium'. This was imported from 'Typodermic Fonts' to Minecraft by Nuin and I am using it in my texture pack with his kind permission.
Please check out his thread here and perhaps leave a nice comment if you like the look the font brings to Glimmar's Steampunk: http://www.minecraft...xcel-help-file/
Animated Terrain Blocks and Items:
PATR101...for animating my eye of ender block*, powered rail*, detector rail*, furnace*, craftbench* and musicplayer* and Vondell's diamond drill pickaxe and diamond chainsaw axe.
Wulf_Oman...for animating Vondell's diamond drill pickaxe and diamond chainsaw axe. Improved edited versions included in the pack by PATR101.

No 44...squid2 *
PATR101...zombie2*,3*,4*,5*,6*,7* He also rejigged the zombie to use as temporary robot villagers drones, now further edited by myself to add shading and temporary tabards to denote profession.

Contributions
I am always happy to receive original contributions to my Steampunk theme pack. These generous submissions of your work help to make this theme and Minecraft a more enjoyable experience for all those who like 'gadgety' goodness. However, please bear in mind, all submissions are used in the freely offered 'extras' download or if suitable as an alternative mob in the RandomMobs collection in the pack.
I'm no longer looking to use the work of others directly in the texture pack, though occasionally something offered catches my eye. If you still want to upload something for everyone to use with this pack, it will be assumed you won't mind it being included in my 'extras' download...if appropriate. I am very happy for users to submit alternative textures, mobs, items etc. using, or based upon, my own textures or your original work, but please refrain from using artwork from other texture packs, unless you are the author of said pack art, as per the forum rules.
Although I am very grateful for the use of your submissions in lieu of mobs, gui's and items I have yet to do, please understand that I do still intend to finish this pack with my own work and that it is an ongoing project subject to constant change at the top of the thread...again at my discretion.
If and when all the pack is converted to my own work, I would still very much like to continue to offer your contributions as alternatives, with due credit of course, in my 'extras' download, again subject to my limited time. I am very grateful for everyone's input, whether by your enthusiasm or voluntary contributions. You have all helped me continue to improve things in Glimmar's Steampunk.
Please note: at present, due to reasons of family and poor health, I won't be able to manage the 'extras' download and your submissions with the regularity you and I would like.

Changelogs
Spoiler
Glimmar's Steampunk v5 for Minecraft v1.2.4/5
3 new plank textures. I am continuing to experiment with new plank types to get the right balance.
2 new sandstone textures
Edited sand slightly to match new sandstone blocks.
Edited old sandstone textures to match the new.
New alternative textures - sandstone and wooden planks (on new alt sheet 5). If I get the chance, expect more alternative wooden plank textures in the future.
Glimmar's Steampunk v4 for Minecraft v1.2.3.
Changed version no. to a simple numbering system that will now increase by one digit every update, eg. this update is version 4 and not v3.8
3 New Iron Golem villager mob.
Toned down the rivets on the copper panelled netherrack to dampen excessive moire in large builds and reworked the copper sheet.
New lapis lazuli block.
Edited the green gaslamp (torch) to give a black rim when seen from above. Necessary now there are no flames coming from the top.
New amber coloured particle flame for normal lava.
New hi-res clouds. Will continue to edit these in the future for more variation.
New round hole stonebrick texture for those like me who like to build in creative. This may change considerably when I find out what the purpose of this new block is.
Two new temporary sandstone blocks which will be edited when they become functional and when I know for sure where in the Minecraft world they are found.
3 new randommob slimes by _Greanleaf_ - slime2*, slime3*, slime4* and slime5*which is a simple brass colour variation of _Greanleaf_'s slime3* I couldn't resist making.
New alternative textures (on alt sheet 5). Should be a lot more to follow for you mod enthusiasts to get to work.
Edited cobble and mossy cobble for better tiling.
Darkened sand slightly.
Glimmar's Steampunk v3.7.1
Fixed the issue with 'zombie8' and 'zombie9' not displaying correctly in game.
The 64x version should correctly display animated terrain blocks when using Optifine. All my animated blocks have been upscaled to 64x to match the upscaled resolution of the terrain.png file.
Both 32x and 64x versions of the pack have had the 'fast' version of the jungle tree leaf texture edited for greater depth, with a darker background to the leaves.
Both 32x and 64x versions have had the alternate 'green' world folder updated with some extra instructions and a 'no lava drip' particles.png file to remove the odd red drips from the green acid lava.
The 'readme' document has been edited to reflect the current pack and Minecraft version number. I forgot to change it previously.
Glimmar's Steampunk v3.7
Now only offering a 32x and 64x pack. We are still only talking about 64x water, lava, fire and portal animations in the 64x pack. Both packs have a variety of 64x mobs and other textures.
Both packs now have an updated 'alt' folder for those wanting 'green' lava and fire.
Increased resolution of terrain animations to 64x64 frames to solve Optifine problem with upscaling terrain animations.
New steampunk 'ozelot' (ocelot) mob.
New 'black cat' mob.
New 'red cat' mob.
New 'siamese cat' mob.
Added my own 'zombie8' and 'zombie9' based on PATR101's zombie robot*.
Edited the robot slave villagers created by PATR101's edit of my textures. Temporarily added scaled up tabard/aprons from the default villagers to better distinguish between the professions. Also added some shading to cogs and wires and changed the facial features. These are still temporary 'stand-ins'.
Two new pigs, and added a snout and a new bottom to randommob pig2.
New cavespider* edit by Deepblue686 using my own and Gestankfaust's randommob 'squid3.png' textures.
Added new randommob skeleton2* by _Greenleaf_.
New HD gaslamp and lava particle.
New jungle leaf terrain texture, then swapped position with the old leaf texture for better effect. So birch and standard trees and the new jungle undergrowth have bigger leaves and the new jungle tree tops have smaller leaves.
New jungle log.
Four new sapling textures. One of which is the new jungle tree sapling.
New iron bars terrain texture. Much less 'moire' in the distance and more versatile as a structural building material.
New redstone lantern textures.
New biome underwatercolor.
New biome fogcolor.
New biome skycolor.
New biome grasscolor.

Glimmar's Steampunk v3.6 Changelog
Moved all animated textures to the new 'anim' folder, as per new MC Patcher.
Fixed the cow and the zombiepig bottoms...tch! The jobs you've gotta do round here!
Fixed the chicken feet (back to front) and added 3 new chicken edits to RandomMobs.
Adjusted position of animated diamond pickaxe to sit a little better in the guis. This is a compromise, as you do miss some of the animated lights when holding the tool, however, it looked a little peculiar sitting up in the top left corner of an inventory box.
Added 3 new 'fire' mobs:
Added 2 'lava' mobs:
Added 3 New silverfish mobs:
Temporary mooshroom mob. Just a recolour of the existing cow.
New HD 'mojang' loading screen...still a work in progress:
Grateful thanks to 'Nuin' for use of his HD font 'Berylium'. This was imported from 'Typodermic Fonts' to Minecraft by Nuin and I am using it in my texture pack with his kind permission. Please check out his thread here and perhaps leave a nice comment if you like the look the font brings to Glimmars Steampunk: http://www.minecraft...xcel-help-file/
New HD main menu 'gui' with a little 'language' gizmo that I hope you feel is appropriate for the theme.
All menu selection bars now have an illuminated valve when hovered over.
New game screen HD fold-out brass inventory gui:
All new HD 'enchant' gui. Spent the better part of a week on this screen alone:
inactive enchantment machine:
activated enchantment machine:
New bookcase 'chemist cabinet' block to fit in with the animated 'enchantment' scheme of things. Various machine parts now come flying out.
Work in progress 'alchemy' gui'.
I will continue work on this and other gui's to work towards a common style of my own for all the gui's. I'll make any menu's I decide to drop, available in the 'extras' download.
Higher res particle smoke, including some top secret steampunk enchantment symbols to match my idea for the new enchant gui. Still to finish other particle icons off.
New waterspeck particle taken from the high res smoke.
New potion 'effect' particle (the spirally thing you see while under the influence of a potion).
New 'slimeball' item for better particle effects when the slime mob bounces on the ground...was too bright before.
New mobspawner ball/egg/thingy. I settled on a simple metallic ball with shiney discs on. I haven't tinkered with the customisable MC Patcher colors for this or the potion bottles yet:
Edited the magma cream item.
Edited the blaze powder item.
Special 'alternate' font of illuminated brass letters used in the enchant gui. Again, fiddly to get it all to work properly with the idea I had for the 'enchant' gui.
New fogcolor0.png for some smoggy/gloomy steampunk conditions (check sand/sandstone pic below).
New stronger watercolorX.png ...now Minecraft seems to be smoothing transitions in the biomes a lot better.
A new iron door.
New textured sand. I've also darkened both the sand and the sandstone for better architectural combos and to make the sand look less luminous in the landscape.
New nether brick...based on the 'normal' brick texture, just darker and redder (like what we call 'Accrington' brick here in the UK or Industrial brick elsewhere)...and with a more damp green mortar.
For those wanting an 'all metal' nether factory look, I will try to work on a new metal texture for all those giant constructions down below.
Changed the netherwort to better match the new netherbrick.
Darkened the clay and reworked the texture to better match the tone of the sand and look less luminous in the landscape, but can still be used as a 'marble' block look-a-like, etc.
Edited the stonebrick to tone down the shadow and highlights at the edge, as they were proving a little hard on the eyes when used as steps and in large constructions, ie. not tiling as well as I would have liked.
Glimmar's Steampunk v3.5 for Minecraft v1.0
Using MC Patcher's new 'Custom Colours' facility, I have been working on new color effects for:
birch trees - to include a greater range of individual natural colours and a suggestion of seasonal change:
pine trees - random tonal range from bright green to dark.
water particles - drips are no longer subject to that garish Mojang hardcoded neon blue, but now more inkeeping with my preference for this theme.
water - new variedly coloured water. More lambent green around swamp areas rather than muddy brown with a range of colours to add variety in other areas, but I've tried to make things as natural as possible.
As a result of including an MC Patcher water biome custom watercolorx.png graphic, it was necessary to rework my custom water animations to increase contrast and opacity to match. Flowing water should look more 'ripply' and still water should better show up against pale textured blocks like stone, sand and clay.
Lighting - I've experimented in this area quite a bit over the festive season and it's been both fun and frustrating. I think I've arrived at an acceptable compromise, bearing in mind my preference for green torches and orange/red lava. Let me explain...
it seems whatever colour glow one chooses for the torches, also gets used for the glow given off by lava, glowstone and lit pumpkins.
It is possible to add flicker effects to torches, etc., this works ok in the confined spaces of a tunnel with twists and turns. It doesn't work so well if you see many of the torches or other sources of artificial light on an epic scale. All that happens then is that the whole landscape pulses in time and the effect not only becomes unrealistic, but actually for me personally becomes annoying and very much a game breaker. Therefore I've opted to have no flicker and stick with the natural flicker that comes with pixelation at a distance.
There is now a greater range of ambient lighting at sunrise/sunset for some truly beautiful natural and architectural scenes. Nighttime light has been given a slightly ethereal greeny blue colour. kahr's work in enabling this level of control over lighting has really been very inspirational.
Included a new random mob pigzombie5* by Balduran.
Edited the pigs bottoms (always wanted to say that!)
Glimmar's Steampunk v3.4 for Minecraft v1.0
4 new Steampunk Christmas Snowmaker Machines, ala snowman.

All new 'Brass' spider:
'Daddy Long Legs' spider:
New 'standard creeper', with brass caterpillar tracks (or should that be Creeperpillar Tracks?!):

New 'animated' dragon egg texture...which should have been in the last update!
New Dragon health bar...again this should have been in the last update!

Added a couple of extra lights to the 'on-state' repeater animation.

Fixed the new 'robot' villager, based on the old zombie mob skin by Vondell, courtesy of PATR101. I put the file in the wrong place.
Increased the brightness of grass, foliage, tall grass, etc. to try to mitigate against the horrid dark swamp and the horribly stark transitions we now seem to have to live with.

Increased contrast on vines to better stand out against the new foliage brightness.
Fixed a line of pixels that had somehow (due to carelessness) attached to the side of the foliage texture.

Added a new shadow.png file.
Included all the alternate terrain texture sheets as requested.

Finally got round to including No.44's more painterly alternative kz.png file in the 'alternative stuff' folder.

Lots of new paintings in the 'kz.png' art file. Old file is in the 'art' folder in the pack.
Spent a fair amount of time refining the appearance of the new 'moon_phases.png' file. The moons are now more 3-dimensional, with more lighting effects and less like they're flat cut-outs stuck on the inside of a dome.
Added alternative green acidic lava bucket 'items.png' sheet. Now residing in a folder in the pack (along with the green acid lava custom animation strips and a readme file).
Glimmar's Steampunk v3.1 for 1.9 v4.

Spoiler
This section is very much a fan-based endeavour administered and regularly updated by ksheep.
There are so many mods I would love to support, but I have to be realistic and admit any spare time I have is expended on improving the main pack. I have provided probably one of the largest collections of alternative textures for any pack (still growing) and a number of users are using these and their own artistic skills to create Steampunk textures for mods that compliment this pack. I am immensely grateful for their input and support and in particular to ksheep for co-ordinating this effort.
If you would like to help support Glimmar's Steampunk by using my textures (see my collection of alts below) or your own skills to make Steampunk equivalent mod textures in the style of this pack, to add to the growing collection here, just give ksheep a shout first. ksheep can tell you if anyone else is already working on the mod you're interested in, or if something needs finishing or improving, and will then include any updates in the Mod Support Pack here:
Download: Mod Support Pack

Please note: if you would like to help with some mod retexturing, please do not use work from any other texture pack, the work must only contain either your own original work and/or my own textures (found within this thread), modified/unmodified as you feel necessary to fit the mod.
So long as you first upload your mod texture support here for ksheep to include in this section, I am credited for any textures used and a link is provided back to my thread here (by way of a 'readme doc' in the download and clear credit and link in your post), you are free to upload the textures for the mod you support in the relevent mod threads. I would consider that action as supporting this pack and also the mod in question.

Male and Female HD Steampunk Characters
Spoiler

The male character is the standard at present. To use the above female character...just copy and paste the above skin to your desktop, rename to 'char' and drop a copy of it into the 'mob' folder in the texture pack. This will replace the standard male character... so if you want to switch back, keep a copy of that handsome little mustachiodude before you drop in your ladydude equivalent. I've included both character skins in the pack download for convenience.

The Leather and Iron armor are finished. The Diamond and Gold armor are place holders obviously derived from my iron armor. I've made them a little more distinct than just a simple color edit by giving each a different powered backpack, plus one or two other little features, but I am intending making more distinctive diamond and gold kit when I get the chance:
Steampunk Leather Armor with 'leather' backpack

Steampunk Iron Armor with 'furnace' backpack

Steampunk Diamond Armor with 'alchemical' backpack

(this last cart was edited for me by d95 who thought I should ride around in style in a gold cart sitting on a comfy red cushion!
How to use:
Copy and paste the minecart skin of choice to the desktop and rename it to 'cart', then drop it in the 'item' folder in 'Glimmar's Steampunk' texture pack in your Minecraft texture packs folder (or your texture pack of choice). Make sure you put it in your active texture pack and not the 'minecraft.jar', otherwise everytime you run Minecraft it will get over-ridden by the cart skin in whichever texture pack you're using...meaning you won't see any change.
The icons are colour coordinated with the minecart of your choice, but you don't need to use them to get the cart to work. However, if you want everything to match perfectly, you need to paste these co-ordinated icons over the top of the existing cart icons on the 'items.png' sheet in the 'gui' folder. Use a graphics programme that can handle transparency, like Photoshop, Gimp or Paint.net.
More on the way (under construction in the workshop)!

Now with added 'Night Vision' capabilities!! Glimmar's Diving Helm in Action
Dougbenham's 'breathing apparatus' mod no longer seems to be supported but there are alternative underwater breathing mods that utilise my helm here: Nandonalt's Mods zedas has kindly provided some steampunk style textures for this mod. Which like everything else can be found in my 'extras' download above. For those who use the 'Bukkit' server system try: 'Pumpkin Diver' by Afforess
With these mods nothing will be stopping you from building those deep sea bases and exploring watery caves and generally pretending to be Captain Nemo! Don't forget a good supply of underwater pumpkin lanterns.
Why not try out Telgar's underwater sound file (not a mod - just a sound clip) while you're down in the deep...perhaps make a sound loop and have it running in the background for a really immersive (haha!) experience! Available here: Underwater_Sounds.ogg

Why Such Strange Textures, Mr Glimmar?
Spoiler
My philosophy for a game with limited blocks, but infinite building potential, is to make as many of the blocks as adaptable or multitasking as possible for my steampunk world. However, I have still designed them to retain some purposeful mystery, I certainly don't want them to appear ridiculous. Remember, many of my blocks were designed at a time when we had far fewer blocks or mods to play around with. At the same time I'm motivated more by building epic architecture and grungy Victorian sci-fi constructions than say your typical medieval fantasy survival style type of gameplay.
So if something in Glimmar's Steampunk looks a little weird and you find yourself asking what on earth was this guy 'on' when he decided on this or that for a texture, try instead to ask yourself what other uses you can put things like pumpkins, beds, musicplayers, clockwork cakes in their 'normal' traditional form, when compared to my more gadgety alternatives. In most other packs a cake can only be a cake, a bed can only be a bed, etc.
My steampunk bed can be: a time machine for jumping forwards in time, a medical contraption, a torture device, a piece of equipment for launching torpedoes on a Steampunk battleship, a bed for creating a Frankenstein creature with redstone wires radiating out from it and anything else you care to invent with your imagination...it's not supposed to look comfortable!! How often do you lounge around in bed in Minecraft for goodness sake!!!
I want to create things for my world that look interesting and are as adaptable as possible. The Minecraft bed is a pretty unique shape and I don't intend wasting it on making a pretty Victorian style bed that has one purpose, and one purpose only, to fluff up and look comfy in the corner!
As far as I'm concerned, and this is of course only my opinion (everyone is entitled to theirs), real bed-like beds in Minecraft are a 'one use only' item...if it looks like a bed, you can't combine it with other blocks to make something else it wasn't intended for. My bed allows you to be far more imaginative, bearing in mind the theme.
To reiterate...for me this theme is about making each item, whether block or special (like the bed) do far more than originally intended. And please don't make the mistake and think I like sticking cogs and pipes on everything just for the sake of it...that's not real steampunk...that's just 'decoration'. Real steampunk for me has to look like it has a function, albeit using the technological components from bygone ages. And besides, my adaptable component bed will one day be animated...try finding a valid reason for animating a bed-like bed.
As regards my Steampunk cake... it can be used as a pretend music player, controls on the bridge of Steampunk vessel, a weird unusual device in a mad scientist's laboratory, etc, etc. and now with the advent of animated functionality, I can make it even more of a useful prop. Yes, there's nothing stopping you animating a standard cake, but unlike a machine, it's going to look pretty strange with rotating cherries on top!! Funny for a while, I grant you, but not something you can seriously use in your plans to create epic constructions.
Changing the blocks the way I have, like most of my decisions about anything in my pack, is to make them more useful, more multifuctional in design for an industrial fantasy world build. Don't forget, I make it clear in my blurb at the top of my thread, that this theme pack is intended for building epic constructions and not designed as the best 'front-end' for role-playing fantasy adventure.
Now, the pumpkin, being the only 'helmet' block we can wear with an editable HUD, was too good an opportunity not to use it for something like a primitive space/diving helmet for building underwater bases, etc. Back then, when the pumpkin first came out in the 'Halloween Update', there was an excellent 'diving' mod by dougbenham that made use of the pumpkin for just this purpose and it worked beautifully in my opinion. Sadly the mod was never supported after further Minecraft updates. Other underwater diving mods just haven't been as well suited to the period nature of a diving helm since.
Further, the pumpkin is another useful source of light in the game, one that can be used underwater and, unlike the glowstones, can actually be moved around...so, perfect for illuminating underwater bases from the outside!
Making a diving helm texture also second as a lantern texture with pipes around it, that fit my newly animated redstone pipes, made it much more useful in this theme than ever a natural looking pumpkin could have been. They also make excellent Victorian railway lanterns, street lights, directional looking airship spots, underwater beacons, etc., etc!
My lantern/diving helm might look strange in the landscape, unless you consider it from the point of view of this theme...Victorian Industrial Steampunk. Then it's purpose in the landscape can be anything from vents for some underground complex, equipment left behind by some failed expedition, or anything you want to put your imagination to. One thing for sure, you should be able to put them to more use alongside my other weird and multi-functional blocks than ever you could with a simple Halloween pumpkin!
As often repeated, this idea of 'multifunctionality' underpins my approach to all the blocks in Glimmar's Steampunk...even the humble dirt block. I could make it look more like real dirt/soil, but then I'd lose it's use as another 'architectural' building block, in this case something like red sandstone. Stone, cobble, gravel, even dirtgrass are purposefully designed to be useable in as many other ways than their naturally occurring states, so by necessity seem more plain than some other packs.
The 'multifunctionality' of blocks is the reason why glass is the way it is...once the only block that can second as wrought ironwork scaffolding as well as a window... now we have iron bars and I've made those as utilitarian as possible too and don't intend making the glass any the less multi-tasking.
'Individual' blocks like the furnace, craftbench, bed, etc. can have more imaginative detail applied for use as gizmos, especially so now with animated versions. However, for me they must still have as many other uses as possible in a Steampunk world besides their normal Minecraft function. Therefore, furnaces can second as 'vents' or perhaps even retro monitors, and craftbenches can be 'control stations' amongst other things.
My 'paintings' in the art folder haven't escaped my peculiar view of Minecraft's possibilities either, hence lots of gadgets, stained glass, and chains...you can just do a lot more with functional looking things than a nice looking painting that looks a bit strange if you repeat it all over your world.
My other imperative is to try to make the textures work as well as possible when seen from a distance, as would be needed for epic builds. This is what I aspire to with Minecraft, rather than 'spelunking cottage style adventuring' - hence my adherence so far to 32x32, and as far as is humanly possible (with my humble skills)...'good tiling'.
If you are trying my pack for the first time, try not to compare it unfavourably with the normal look of Minecraft, as this is after all a 'steampunk' theme pack, not a medieval or modern day realistic texture pack and I've always tried to remain faithful to my original ideas without getting too silly by sticking cogs and pipes on absolutely everything.
My philosophy for a game with limited blocks, but infinite building potential, is to make as many of the blocks as adaptable or multitasking as possible for my steampunk world. However, I have still designed them to retain some purposeful mystery, I certainly don't want them to appear ridiculous.

For some good exercise for the brain, why not try out gamerx123's 'OBSTACLISED' puzzle map. You're not forced to use my pack with it, but he designed his map with it in mind and it's a real challenge. Here's the link: Obstaclised
