My suggestion is to make the field of view adjustable. The reason for this are those who have motion sickness. Like my girlfriend. She doesn't want to play Minecraft with me very often (although she loves the concept) because she gets a headache and gets dizzy. That happens in most FPS games. However, when I set the FOV lower in other games, her sickness gers bearable.

Examples to FOV from Unreal Tournament (not taken by me):
Set at FOV 90
Set at FOV 130
On the latter img you can see the fisheye-effect which can cause dizzyness to some people (not for me - I have always played FPS-es at higher FOV rates :))

I know there are more important things now to do... But what do you think? I don't know how hard this would be to implement.

It's simulation sickness not motion sickness. However, I understand your point. I'd like to make a note that Minecraft doesn't scale the FOV to the window. So if you make it thinner then it will appear less... bubble vision...

You'll need Firefox and grease monkey but there is an option to set your own size of the Minecraft window I think...

Worth a shot maybe. As a temporary fix of course.

You can turn off the screen wobble. That might help a little.

I think Minecraft _does_ scale the FOV to the window. Because I've tried to shrink it with the Greasemonkey script, but the viewing angle did not change. If the FOV was lower as you shrink the playing screen, you would see less from the world. Although I believe scaling down Minecraft _can_ help reducing the simulation sickness. It's worth a shot :)

I've really forgot to turn off the view bobbing. Thanks!

Oh and I forgot to mention the people who want to set the FOV higher. :cobblestone: This means better chance at noticing a mob coming from your side because of the wider viewing angle, which can come handy in survival or in spleef.

I was going to post this same idea as a suggestion myself, but a quick search lead me to this thread.

I've played a lot of video games. I've never been affected by field of view in any way until I played Borderlands. Apparently, Borderlands had an abnormal FOV compared to most other FPS games and it gave me a pretty bad headache while playing. After some .cfg editing, I managed to make it playable and fixed my problem.

Cut to a few months later. I'm playing Minecraft and starting to get the same sort of headache/nausea. My fiancee thought the game looked fun, but after sitting down to play for a while herself, she had the same reaction.

Is there any chance that in a future build we would have the option of widening/shrinking the FOV?

This post is basically just seconding Dinnye's original post and letting Notch know that there are others out there who would like this feature. :D

From what I can understand, the dizziness that games like these produce is likely because you're looking at a small percentage of your vision, and it's simulating a large percentage of vision. That is, while the game has a wide FOV, the square the game occupies is, in reality, a pretty small FOV. It has previously occurred to me that the best view would be one that corrosponds more closely to the size of one's screen, and how close one is to their screen, and thus, it ought to be flexible.

Until it is, you could try moving closer/farther away and seeing if that helps the dizziness.

It's actually better for me when it's only a portion of my screen size. I've played in full screen windowed mode before and that just makes me sick even faster.

I don't understand why people get motion sickness from games.

I don't understand why people get motion sickness.

Come to think of it, I don't know what people mean by vertigo.

Crazy heights and movement have never bothered me... Well, you know, unless there weren't something to keep me from falling.
This may be a fad, but I love dragons, so why the heck not?

As long as it isn't changeable past 90 degrees. Anything else is borderline cheating. It would probably have to be a server side option as people with clients could just hack that value.

So, it's probably best to leave it alone. Sorry about your girlfriend... Maybe one that could play minecraft would be better? I kid, I kid!

Yeah, i agree. And when you put the game in fullscreen its like ... *FWOOSH!*. I would love to be able to change the FOV. You can do it in TF2, and it's very helpful.

I'm still here and it still makes me get a terrible headache when I play in fullscreen or play in normal resolution for more than ~30 minutes at a time. :P

with the new stand-alone client, being able to change the size means that you have at least some control over the effect of the field of view. I've found this to be helpful.

You can change the viewing size, but that's not the same thing as the field of view, unfortunately.

no it's not. I'm just saying, it's better than nothing, until adjustable fields of view become possible

I am a serious First Person Shooter. I have been playing fps games since wolfenstein 3d. I have never changed the FOV in any of these games. I have had simulation sickness when i had a bad CRT monitor at a lan party 10 years ago. Got so sick. I currently play boarderlands, tf2, CoD MW2, and WoW with no problems.

I REALLY want to buy Minecraft. I have been doing nothing but watching youtube videos about it.

My problem is that this is the only gaming experience where I get simulation sickness at the current moment. It may be the FoV that is different like the others say. I would buy this game in a heartbeat if I could play it headache free.

Searching for Headache - Minecraft on google sent me here. I just wanted to make another post to show there are more of us having headaches with this game.

This is a groundbreaking gaming experience, I hope to take part in it soon.

Please post if there is something in the Alpha that may fix this issue. I will buy it as soon as i hear this issue has been addressed.

Provided you can't drop the FOV so low that you have telescope eyes, sure :o

I love the game, i got addicted and played quite alot, that is, until I started getting vertigos and intense headache... (by intense i mean, you almost scream of pain... and put both hands on your forehead... Ouch...) I had to lay down at some point because of the dizziness... Never had motion sickness or simulation sickness before and Im sure at 99.9% that minecraft was the cause... :Notch: I want to play again, but I know the sickness will come back... I'm a big gamer, I play a lot of games, mainly 1st person shooters, and it never happened before... I even tried duke nukem 3d back in the days in virtual reality and even that didn't give me any trouble... I think there's some science behind all this, but I don't know how to explain it... :\ I guess FOV and the size of the screen (imac 27'') must have something to do with it.... Would be awesome if it could be fixed!!
