Stuck with the SkinEdit loading screen?
Just download this and put it in your SkinEdit folder, restart and it should load! This will disable the offline mode so you need to have a Internet connection to launch SkinEdit (due to notch previewer code).

Downloads
If you want to install SkinEdit just download the latest version from below.

Info
SkinEdit is a simple graphics editor optimized for making Minecraft skins. It got many features to make it easier for beginners to understand how Minecraft skinning works as well as all the features even experienced skinners need. With over 1 million downloads so far it is the leading skin maker for minecraft!

Mirror for previewer
If you have problems seeing the previewer you can try to put in one of these two links when SkinEdit asks you for the download link. You can also put these in your web browser to download the file. Download it directly to the folder SkinEdit is located in or move it after you downloaded it.

Tutorial video on how to install:

Key features
  • Easy to understand for a new skinner
  • Notch skin previewer embedded and updated in real-time. Will show how your skin would look in-game (by default)
  • It has the features you need the most. Burn and dodge for shading, flood fill and large brushes to paint large areas
  • Fully functional undo and redo system
  • PartPicker - A simple way of adding details to your skin!

PartPicker, introduced in alpha 3 pre 5, an easy way to add details to a skin

Additional downloads
Since alpha 3 pre 4 you can add your own backgrounds and use. Some of the best backgrounds will be listed here for download!
For a background to work the width must be dividable by 64 and the height by 32.

Mobs reskin pack (fixed) (by: Notch, Patrik Swedman)
Unfortunately you can't preview them property, but at least you can use SkinEdit for some of your re-skin needs. Includes both a gray scale and a color version of every mob image (except zombie, which is the same as the player skin) in the size 640x320. (The problem with the color ones not being scaled has been fixed)

Improved spider template (Based of Spider Background above, by: Quiteblank)
A better template for making spiders

EiETemplate (by: The Eie)
A alternative to the normal backgrounds. Best viewed with a bright background and with around 70% alpha. (Will be included in alpha 3 pre 5)

I'll probably make my own color chooser and then I can add palettes. I'll also fix that spelling error as soon as I find the source file for the image, it's somewhere in C:\...

Thanks for the feedback.

I don't like it because it undermines the importance of experienced skinners, like anything that helps people make skins.
I guess it's good as far as the program itself goes. *sigh*

Give me a box and I'll think out side of it. Give me nothing and I won't think.

What "importance" is this? The ability to prance about like a king amongst kings? Pretend you're better than those lowly begging peasants with their need for a skin-fix?

I KNOW! It makes me so angry when they make things accessable and fun for everyone.

Yay Swedish! :D

But you should add something like a preview button there, so you dont have to upload it to MC every time you wanna see what it looks like.
I'm still wondering how the creepers gained the ability to climb ladders...

Well that makes it sound kind of harsh... It's just nice being able to do something not everyone is good at.

YAY. Now I can finally start a skinning career. I still will suck, but heck, it's a lot easier.
Maybe you can set up some sort of previewer that just assembles the skin so we can view it before equipping it.

I also agree with A.I

You would loose that feeling of "yay I did something hard and people praise me for it"
And it isn't that hard to make your own skins.

My 12 year old sister can make pretty decent ones on paint!

How does this give you any advantage? Skinning isn't about locating which parts to colour in, it's about the artistic talent you apply. It's a good idea as a tool, and it's ridiculous to be bitter about it.

Preview feature is one of the things on the todo list as well as a better color chooser (this one is not only messy and ugly, it also breaks key shortcuts sometimes).

Edit: Also, the text that is in Swedish in the screenshot will probably be in your native language, it seems to base the language depending on your computer settings (settings that is, not computer language)

Selfish bastards.

Anyway, I really like this, quite honestly. This is a tool that can be used by anyone and anything and simplifies the effort of memorizing templates (you still need to know how to use Pixel Art and such though, no tool can ever take that away).

I approve of this.
