I could be wrong, but I am confident the music is just random.

I've heard just about every track just building my castle - from the creepy cave music to the calm piano.

...if I'm wrong, then I am definitely missing something nearby my castle..

Shorter music bits (usually creepy) indicates a cave of somesort nearby. And by cave i mean any sort of open space in the terrain
Playing since before we even had fences.

In single player survival there are mid-day and mid-night audio indicators.  When you are underground it can seem a bit random and ominous...

The source of the noise is usually a dark area. You probably only hear it if the darkness is enough to spawn monsters.

If you hear it in a lit area, there's darkness behind a wall or something. For example, I place my chests in walls like this (Side view):

:White:  :White:  :White:
:White:  :Skeleton:  :--+:
:Pig:  :D
:Pig:  :stone:  :stone:

If I don't place a torch where the obsidian image is, I hear noises there.
No, look up, you're reading it wrong.

It's random as long as you're in an enclosed space, probably linked with being near cave-y materials like flat stone.

I've heard that the music is sometimes played randomly, but as usaly it plays when there's a dungeon near you.

Not sure if this is true, but I think it might be.
I know for sure it's true if I find a dungeon close to my base, because the music plays all the time when i'm there, but almost never when I'm somewhere else.

I'm sure that heavy music/ 'scary' music starts to play when you are close to a dungeon/mob spawner

It plays if you are near an enclosed, dark area (usually a cave). You can easily test this in game by digging a hole, leaivng it unlit and sealing it off afterwards. Voila, every time you come near it you hear a creepy cave sound.

I tried this, and when ever I get within 3 blocks distance, the creepy music plays, regardless of whether it's a dungeon, or a 1x1 area.  If it's completely dark , the music plays.

Sends a chill down my spine, every time.

According to the wiki, it indicates a 3x3x3 or larger sized open area with light level at completely zero, somewhere between 10 to 20 blocks away from you. I use headphones and the sound seems to have a direction as well, so following the noise could lead you to an unexplored cave, or just a small hole underground.

Those scary sounds play when there is an unlit cave near by.
