what worked for me was to install the linux version of minecraft. I think it is under "linux/other" when you want to download the game.
This worked for me for me and although it doesn't have the nice little grass block logo, all mods will still work and if you didn't delete your worlds they still work.
Hello, I was having this same problem. Java was completely not working on my computer, and I wasn't able to reinstall it. When I tried to reinstall, I got the error "This software has already been installed on your computer. Would you like to reinstall it?" and when I hit yes, it gave this error "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed." So I thought that maybe I hadn't completely uninstalled it, so I did all I could with no Java experience to remove it with no success. I ended up googling my problem, and I found a program that fixed my issue, it's located here on a forum I found: http://forums.whatth...howtopic=104537 The program itself can be downloaded from here: http://forums.whatth...ads&showfile=41 From what I understand, this program looks for and deletes Java registry keys so that you can re-install Java properly. After running the program I was able to reinstall Java and Minecraft and all other Java programs worked for me once again
Alright. Could you go to your control panel, and look for "Programs and Features" (Add/remove programs in older versions of Windows), uninstall java from there. Reboot, go to:

and verify if you do have java installed? List any errors you get if you do. Update if it tells you to. Tell me what java version you have.
Once you have verified that you have java installed, and up to date, could you please go to your control panel.
There'll be a java icon there, If you go to the java tab, and click on "view", you can see the path(s) that java is installed in. Could you paste those paths here?
when I clicked the java icon it said application not found
I was having the same problem as the OP, and after trying every solution I saw posted here, I was still getting the same error. No matter how many times I re-installed java, or uninstalled it and then installed it, or deleted Minecraft and re-installed, nothing changed.
So I got fed up, went to Control Panel, went to Programs, and uninstalled everything with Java in it's name. I then did a global search and deleted every instance of the Java folder I could find *except* for C:\Program Files\Java. I then tried launching Minecraft again, and this time got a "this program requires I Java Runtime Environment 1.50" or something, clicked ok, and was linked to the Java download page. I downloaded Java, opened Minecraft again, and almost had a heart attack when I saw that this heavy handed obliteration of Java from my computer had actually worked, and I can play Minecraft again.
I think the problem originally arose from my moving the JRE to my recently downloaded eclipse folder (as the eclipse install doesn't come with a JRE for some ridiculous reason), and, like a dumb ass, I cut it instead of copying. Later reversing this didn't help, it was only when I nuked the whole thing from orbit that it worked.
So for anyone still having this problem, and still not getting any of the solutions to work for you, just go to Control Panel, then Programs and Features, and uninstall everything Java. Then bring up the start menu, do a computer wide search, and delete everything with Java in the name except the folder C:\Programs\Java. Then open Minecraft again, and if you get an error about Runtime Environment 1.50 or something, you are on the right track, and the download it will take you to should work. If you still see the same error, try deleting that last folder too (you will be re-installing anyway), and then just to be doubly sure (and to take out some anger on Java for wasting so many hours of my day with this bs) I deleted everything out of the recylce too, so there was no trace of Java outside that one folder.
If this works for anyone else, let me know.
I've been trying to fix this one for days, it seems that "Sherman's March to the Sea" is my only remaining option.
1. Open Control Panel
2. Goto Programs and Features
3. Uninstall all Java related software
4. Run minecraft and you should get something like: Requires Java Runtime Enviroment, It will then redirect you to java download page.
5. Follow all steps to install Java
6. Run Minecraft and it will work!
I figured out I was running Java 6 and the new update required Java 7 (when I used the Feature on orical that tells me if I have java it said I didn't have java, but minecraft still ran so whatever.)
This worked for me for me and although it doesn't have the nice little grass block logo, all mods will still work and if you didn't delete your worlds they still work.
thank u u made Minecraft work again for me thank u u got minecraft working again
