I also want to know this. As far as I can tell, the only file related to Minecraft on my PC is the .exe, but surely there are other files somewhere else.

world file? you mean your "map"?
is the exe file a stand alone file?
the server exe file i used, had ohter files with it, in a folder.. and in that folder a new folder was made, world.. thats your world map folder.

And the path to it (I think) is: C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft

well thats is for the single player... the server, is in the folder were you got your exe file.
the first time you log in on the server it creates the map. and its placed in your server folder.
you can change the name on the folder, if you got more then one map.
and open the properties folder, and type the name of what map you wonna use on the server.
level-name=(folder map name)
