I have the same problem, I think. I open up the minecraft.exe file I downloaded, it asks whether I'm sure I want to run it since it's an .exe file, I click 'Run' and nothing else happens. I've restarted the computer, tried both downloads, nothing.

I have the same problem, and have seen on other posts that uninstalling Java, then running ccleaner, then installing Java again has fixxed this for a lot of people.

Worked for me.
I updated CCleaner, used the uninstaller to ditch Java 6 update 21.
Went using IE to download Java 6 update 21... And now I can run it and log in.
Cannot wait to get home.

I've checked the help stickies for this; I can't see any that relate to this problem, though I could be wrong.

I'm attributing the game not working on my browser due to my old computer which doesn't really look kindly on browser-based games, even Minecraft Classic crashes after a few minutes of playing. The computer can run installed games just fine, though.

The downloaded game, however, just isn't installing. After opening the downloaded .exe file it shows the cursor hourglass for a second or two and then absolutely nothing happens. It's kinda driving me mad, since I would really like to play this game.

Bumping this. It's a real problem. I love Minecraft, but as it is, it only works on my laptop.

Worst thing is I actually managed to play it for a while on my desktop, but then it just stopped working...

Hello-- new to the forums and unfortunately it has to be a bump to a problem which I am having quite the problem with.  Same problem, synapsis:  Works in Google Chrome fine, however when ATTEMPTING to use the desktop app it does not open any window, however my system gets severely bogged down as if it is trying to allocate memory or open a heavy duty program...

Here is what I have tried:
Manually uninstalling/reinstalling Java (verifying there is no prior versions)
Same for Minecraft
Cleaned my PC
Gave up and went back to Google Chrome.

haha, quite intolerable... but I am coping.  The desktop application would be much more efficient and having the BIG window would be nice.

BUMP-- please, someone elaborate a healthy fix to this issue!

Im having the same problem here, its annoying as hell but yet it still works in the browser.

Thinking it could be an actual PC problem.
I am 64bit Windows 7.

Maybe thats the problem

i've got the same problem but i figured it was the texture packs because i had just downloaded a TP before and it froze and closed itself, but i cant delete the texture pack because i cant access the folder without opening minecraft, so it's a bit of a paradox.

Try downloading the .jar file.
Then, put it in C:\Minecraft\minecraft.jar (you will have to make this folder).
Next create a new Notepad file, and paste this into it:java -Xms650m -jar "C:\Minecraft\minecraft.jar"
Save this file as a batch file (.bat).
Open the batch file.
If this doesn't work, try changing minecraft.exe or .jar to compatibility mode and try again.

This worked for me, hopefully it helps.
