When logging into Minecraft you are asked to enter your username and Password.

I feel that you should also be able to change your player name as you like, bans, kicks, whitelists etc would still use the players username.

But this means that players on Roleplay servers can change their name to something more appropriate than 1337sniplolzer.

I searched for name and name change and found no relevant results.

I agree with this, so long as the bans, kicks, whitelists and things of that nature do, as you said, use the person's username. However, I feel that this will probably happen anyways a little while on but it's probably the type of thing that would require a pretty big amount of code change. I don't know anything about Java, though, I just say that because of the way the player authentication system is currently set up.

Make it so in the options there is your "nickname" but  your user name never changes. Like how Steam does it.

This would be a good idea.

Also it hides your account name, so it does help marginally against account theft.

It doesn't matter about having a cool name. There should be a difference between username and player name

Good point.

Perhaps there could be certain protected names that you can't switch to, such as Notch, Admin, ServerAdmin, Administrator and suchlike.

I know this thread is old, but I want to point out that you can get a Name Spoofer, which is generally used by pirates.
As such, it is generally included in pirated downloads of Minecraft.

Something similar to Steam's system then? The players sign in with a set username upon account creation, but they can choose what their display name is at any time.

I solidly agree with this, I'm sick of seeing my username in chat.

A server could accomplish this with a chat plugin if it's running bukkit or someting by giving you a nickname

'tommurphy' is a crap name; I never thought about using SMP and only used it because it was easy for me to remember.
I want to change it now..

I know for a fact that server admins/mods have the power to change people's name appearances in that particular server, I've had it done before.

Definitely a good idea because if you join a clan and need to change your name you can do it.

I would really like to see something like this, I would like to customise my name, or at least use my typical name >.<
