Back then, was

RAMPlayers = (RAMAmount * 0.75) / 100;

still a sufficiently accurate measurement?

I still prefer to budget at least 100mb a player to smooth operation. Even then there are still a lot of other things not taken into consideration, such as multiple worlds, other plugins running, dynmap/it's webserver etc.

A lot of people also don't seem to understand it gives you such a low number because of your upload...sure your players can get by with less, but it's not ideal.
sigh...

Uh... It said I can only host 3 people. Impossible. I always thought I had epic internet connection. Oh well then.

Run a few tests with your upload speed, preferably 150KM or more distance, obviously you get higher speeds the closer they are.
Keep in mind that ISP's advertise in MEGABITS (Mb), not Megabytes (MB). Its a nasty marketing trick that gets alot of people until they realize it.

Here's a bit-calculator: http://www.matisse.net/bitcalc/

For reference: 1.0 Megabit = 128 KiloBytes.

Result: Yes, a million times!

You can host a maximum of:

61
Players at the same time, plus yourself

You've got a fast enough internet connection and enough RAM to cope with a decent number of players.

Looks like you're all set up to play. Enjoy!

Hellz yeah.

Not so much; anything that deals with the low-level transmission of data is typically represented in bits, rather than bytes.

Buying a gigabit ethernet adapter? gigaBIT, not gigabyte.

802.11g wifi? 54 megaBITs, not megabytes.

Downloading a picture from flickr? x megabytes, not megabits.

There is a significance between the bytes and bits when it comes down to the OSI layers, which is NOT a marketing trick, but may seem so, if you're not looking at a bigger slice of bits/bytes applications elsewhere.

Holy crap. I used to only be able to get 2 people for mine (if it would actually let them on...) but now I get can 46 if I have it running while I'm at school.

I should try starting up my friends server now that I know I have a decent computer. c:

Guys, don't be fooled. I've got to keep telling people that this thing is not working properly.

Maybe you should go ahead and read hexparrots post at the top of this page. It's not going to be possible to make anything more accurate while keeping to just 2 metrics (and thus keeping it simple enough for 99% of people to use)

It's sole purpose is to provide a rough idea. If it says you can only host 2, you may well get away with 4, 8 or even more - but it's very clear that you're not going to be hosting 20 or 30. Likewise if it says you can host 50 or more, you may well get away with far higher than that, but it does indicate that you're going to be able to handle a substantial number of users at the same time.

It's purely a starting point for people who don't already have one and are just beginning to look into it. Nothing more.

I had a go at using this and it predicted I could run 3 people at a time. I can run 8 people with only the slightest signs of lag every now and again and up to 12 people before the lag really begins to kick in...

I think this guide is more to the point of how many people you can run without any lag whatsoever and with no risk of lag whatsoever - at least, thats what it seems to do for me :P

I have an upload speed of 0.5 MB and apparently I can only host one other person, can't see how one person is going to take up that much space on a server.

What about CPU? Could you run 120 people on a Celeron at 1.2GHz? Don't think so. Just a suggestion but maybe put like a link to click where you get a table or overview of processor clock and plugins / players / chunks / drops or something. You wont have to add it into the formula but just general information about CPU and minecraft servers. Afraid alot of kids will go buy 32gb ram pack it into their motherboard like some kind of turkey on thanksgiving not realizing their cpu can barely hold 10 plugins Posted Image

Thanks for this tool its pretty cool and this was just a suggestion Posted Image

I have to 100% disagree with the website.

I have a 35/5 connection. My system is an i7 2600k, geforce gtx570 OC, and 16gb of RAM, it says on 12 people...really? I have 30+ on my server when my clan gets together, and zero lag

fix yer stuff bro

If you didn't read the other posts, it's only accounting for two variables. Your i7 processor? Not even factored.

This is made as a rough estimate for new server owners who can't get a good/likely idea of what they will be able to host. It's kept simple for a reason.

The logic has been changed to assume a lower amount of RAM used per player.

Your internet connections upload speed is the most limiting factor in most situations.

I think the upload for amount of players/Mb should be increased. Around four per Mb instead of three.

Spoiler

But you just put 999999 in all 3 boxes, if you had that high an upload, download, and RAM, you probably would be able to. Except I suppose there's a CPU issue.

My limit is my internet connection, but I can get many more online than it says without lag.
