Want to check how many players you can host, or if you can even host at all?

CanIHostAMinecraftServer.com
And it'll tell you roughly how many players you can host. Just to make it easy and to avoid the constant "how much RAM do I need?" and "how many people can I host?" threads.
Make sure to enter memory amounts in MEGABYTES not gigabytes
This is not always correct, do not complain if the number it shows you is not accurate

Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.
Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="Off"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>
Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.
<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>

Edit: Fixed, but you'll need to flush your local DNS cache before you'll see it again.

I made a topic about this site, and this mod comes along, creates about it, and doesn't recognize I already have one.
geez, at least I don't get respect around here.

Mate, the mod that came along is actually the creator of the website if I am not mistaken. But I doubt he has the time to read every topic, unless of course he has a robot doing it for him.
This is a good site, but I would like to stress out this is by no means a bullet proof estimation. It is a *theoretical* guess at the capacity of a server, there are various more factors such as modifications, hard disk drive speed, CPU speed, port and state of the actual ram (a dedicated server's ram tends to work a lot better then Shared ram on a VPS, for one.).
I would also suggest not to include burst memory when you fill in the available Ram, as burst memory generally is to unstable and in some cases slow to rely on for a Minecraft Server.

What OS did you manage to do that with? To be honest, I always considered 1GB the absolute minimum.

I ran it with Microsoft XP.
Basically I had the .jar, then the SimpleServer wrapper. I would turn off most undesired background process' including Explorer.exe and use my netbook to purely run the command prompt. Then, go downstairs on log in on my desktop PC.
Worked well, honestly.

Odd... Over here, Java already took up 250mb (Windows 7) before anyone joined...
