Allocating More Memory To Java

Step 1.
Open CONTROL PANEL.

Step 2.
Type 'Java' inside the 'Search Control Panel' box.

Step 3.
Click the Java icon that pops up.

Step 4.
Click the Java tab.

Step 5.
Click View...

Step 6.
Assure there is only ONE line in here, any more lines could cause issues.
If you have multiple lines uninstall all versions of Java from your system and...
...download Java JDK 7 from the following link.
Make sure to get the x64 version if you have a 64-bit OS.
http://jdk7.java.net/download.html

Step 7.
Change Runtime Parameters.
I have mine set to:
-Xincgc -Xmx2048M

Change it depending on how much RAM you have.
For 32-bit Operating Systems 768M is recommended.
If you have 64-bit, or that doesn't work, continue to try the following
1G
1536M
2G
As I said, this varies depending on how much System RAM you have.

Step 8.
Click OK.

Step 9. (OPTIONAL)
Restart your system, not necasary.

Step 10.
???

Step 11.

Techinically it's not. This is extremely relevant to texture packs with high resolutions as the game wasn't designed to sustain such high uses of memory.

This thread is just as relevant to Texture Packs as the MCPatcher thread is.

But wouldn't this be better suited in perhaps the Tutorial section?

No, because then everyone QQing in Texture Pack Threads would miss it.

It's the same reason why MCPatcher isn't in the Released Mods section.

Here is what happened,

I did everything exactly as you did in the video , downloaded LB's Photo Realism 256 x 256 pack + HD texture fix and started minecraft. I instantly got the memory error crash.
I decided to do it a second time except with 2 gigabytes instead of 800mb..... same problem instantly.
I decided I would try it one last time before resorting to this thread, this time with 15 gigabytes..... I instantly got the very same message (although it did show zans minimap for a split-second on the third attempt).

Do I just have a crap computer or am I doing something wrong? please answer!

I don't think you have 15GB of RAM....
Anyway, can you post your specs?

After finding the java icon in my control panel search, I learnt that it was the 32 bit version, and I have a 64 bit OS. So I'm going to install the 64 java, I don't know if that will make a difference, but thanks. Now I know I need to 'upgrade'.

My friend asked me how you complete Minecraft. I told him you've got to think outside the box.

Sorry, I am unaware of how to do this on a MAC, as I only use Windows.
I changed the title to reflect this.

Hopefully someone else can assist you with this.
