Some time ago, I found Minecraft randomly, on the internet.
Creative was nice and all. Slightly unpolished, but hey, it's pretty cool.
After a few weeks of regular playing, it faded away.

A few months back, I started playing Creative, together with a few Facepunch buddies. I quickly became an admin for a -HUGE- server, and shortly after I was offered my own server. Someone would handle the hosting, and I'd be able to call it home. Me and a friend started it, and it was great. Lots of people playing everyday.
That was when I heard about InDev / InfDev. It sounded awesome, but unfortunately, I can't buy stuff online. PayPal doesn't accept my credit card and I can't link it to a bank account here.

The only choices I had: pirating or not playing it.

I soon became addicted, and I was loving it, really. It was much better than Creative, wow. I started to follow InfDev discussions and the SMP talk made me sad. I wouldn't be able to play it.
Fortunately, someone gifted me, and some time later, I got a second account. I let friends that can't buy it test Minecraft for one week. After that, if they really like it, I try to get someone to buy it for them.

I'm not proud of pirating. I actually felt bad for pirating an indie game, and I don't really want anyone to do it. You want the game? Buy it. Can't pay? Try to get someone to buy it for you. It's not fair that Notch works that hard and gets nothing our of it.

Notch, thanks for making a great game like Minecraft. Keep it up.  :iapprove:

Actually, this is like what Notch stated in his blog about pirating. He doesn't like that people would pirate his game, but if it meant that one person were to get other people to buy it or even end up buying it themselves, it would be worth it in the end and he'd be ok with it. Your story is pretty much exactly what he would like pirates to do.

The free online version wouldn't work with my computer. But I was curious, so I pirated the alpha.

And gave it to my friends. And then I bought it. Then they bought it. Now their friends and room mates are buying it. 6 sales from one pirated copy. I hope that is the average!!

Don't buy it? No updates and you can't play multi with us... sale sale sale lol

It pisses me off to see people snubbing a game for free when thousands of others are paying for it HELPING the game unlike the people getting a free ticket in.

I really hope we'll get guestpasses in the future so people don't have to pirate the game to try it out..
That or a time-limited demo.

@Nemexus:
The people who buy it are satisfied that they're aiding its longevity, where the people who pirate it are satisfied that they got it for free. Everyone's happy.

Then people who bought it get mad at people who didn't, because they aren't aiding its longevity, and the people that pirated it retaliate. No one's happy.

Someone realizes that both methods of getting the game are just means to the same end, but people are too unhappy to believe it.

Pirating the game shouldn't be an option for people who want to test things out. Notch could make a trial version, but then the files would be downloaded to your computer and somebody could just make a client for them. Hmmm.....

I believe this game is worth buying. I bought it, well my dad did, and proud to be helping the game.

I played Minecraft on my friends computer to humor him (who wants to play this blocky game?) 5 minutes later I was trying to remember my paypal info so I could buy the game.

That's actually the reason I pirated it in the first place.  No trial mode.

I'd seen the videos, but I wanted to try it out before making a definitive purchase.  I tried the pirate version, and ended up getting a copy for me, and a friend bought a copy too.

Maybe Notch could do like a trial mode.  Like those 30 minute trials.  That could work here.  Anyone who's gonna pirate because they want it free is still gonna pirate.  But now those of us who want trials get an opportunity to play as well.

I figure 30 minutes is enough to judge the game, and also often enough so that it's not worth the time reinstalling it every time you play.  That deters people from playing the game for free with the trial.

and thats where the admins here fail in my opinion. they obviously dont even understand how to use the custom bbc code fields in the ACP (admin controll panel) to their fullest extent.

ill just hint this...

instead of

{text} (there text is the numbers/letters)
try
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v={text}

that will allow for an easier to use bbc code.

and now back on topic, its great that you've gotten a few friends to buy minecraft, even thogh you did pirate it. mabey you should try donating some money to notch anyways.

I have it pirated still, it's been about two days, I'm just waiting to get paid though so I can friggin pay off my bank account and then be able to use my paypal again :l

This game is so addicting.

Anyways, to me pirating is ok because most people that pirate something were more then likely not going to buy it in the first place. For most pirated games there is no way to play it online which would mean you are missing out on a lot, and even if you do manage to play it online it's most likely a private server and those are never nearly as good as the legit servers.

I didn't pirate it (although I would have if it was my only option), I'm currently playing "offline" on a client a friend activated for me. I don't think this is as ethically bad as pirating (as pirating often involves hacking).

I don't hate anyone that does pirate it though, I've done my fair share of game pirating before. For this game, I can't pay for it right now. I will be able to in the future, but as someone said, this game is too good to wait for.

The only people I dislike are the ones pirating it, and have no intentions of ever paying for it afterwards at all.
