Doesn't seem to recognize the items with colons in them as in game items, is there a specific way of spawning those with colons?

If using Bukkit server...

I actually had this problem when I first started, basic items I could spawn but couldnt with perams.
Install Essentials ( you dont need the group manager crap tho if your already using permissions )

This solved it for me, then /i 35:15  etc worked for me.
Hope this helps.

I don't think it works without Essentials, and Bukkit, as mentioned above.

But, once you've got Essentials running on your server you just need to be an op, and either do /give your_name id:number amount or /i id:number amount

By default it'd give you 64 if you don't specify an amount.

Don't use Essentials, it's buggy and conflicts with many other plugins. I am not a big fan of monolithic plugins in general. A plugin should be small, efficient, and do just one or two things very well. When you try to do everything, you end up not doing any of them efficiently. With that in mind, I recommend you use one of these plugins if you want to spawn items with data values:

CommandBook
General (Either the Chernobyl or Dvorak builds)

The only Essentials anything I use is Groupmanager, which is actually very nice and much more functional than Permissions.

for essentials, use a period instead of a colon

for commandbook, use a colon
