Please note that no change is planned, we are just curious for your thoughts. There is no guarantee that the result of this poll will cause any change, we are still discussing what to do.
As you may have recently noticed adfly is now banned from the bukkit forums (source) and the response seems to have been quite positive.
Please answer the above poll and post any thoughts you have below, reasons for or against banning would be appreciated. Please do not argue or insult other users.
Please select the option most relevant to you; you are a modder for the sake of this poll if you have posted a mod on this forum or on the bukkit forums.
I think modders deserve a little bit of profit for all their hard work. What I love about adf.ly is it allows the modder to make a little bit of revenue while the people using the mod only have to give up a few seconds of their time. People make a huge deal about ads but they're a great way to keep free things on the internet free and I fully support it. Plus most modders make adf.ly links optional so don't complain its wasting your time. I think all they should do is explain what adf.ly is because it confused me at first.

I find Google text ads the only ads I can tolerate. They're unobtrusive and clean, and sometimes even for something I'm interested in.
Lol, I have to agree with this - Google ads are quite nice.

Regardless, I am a modder and use adfly with my mods, I provide an alternate download for users to use if they don't want to use adfly. Over the month and a bit I have used it, around 75% of downloads go through adfly even when users have the option to use an alternate download - which is directly below the adfly link. I think this shows that people who use mods don't mind seeing a few ads if it is going to benefit the modder.
Whilst adfly is a good service it does have its pitfalls such as it being a 3rd party site, occasionally people complain about getting malware and people who can't even access the site due to ad blockers. So I guess what I am saying is that although adfly provides a useful service it does have its limitations and I would be happy to change to another service that provides a similar functionality to adfly.
With or without adfly people will be making mods - so why not reward the good mods?
**edit**
Would probably be wise to put this in pinned in the other modding boards as well to get a larger user base to vote.
and the response seems to have been quite positive.
It's been positive cause most of the Bukkit plugin dev's that have used adf.ly weren't able to get any money from it, so they assume that it's worthless. :tongue.gif:
Taking from Rotten194's post, we will just host our mods elsewhere.
I currently adfly the link from the MCF to the MMC page, and leave the download on MMC un-adflyed. That way people can bookmark the MMC page if they really like my mod. Even with that, it's not strange for me to see > 500 adfly hits on an update day, so people don't mind supporting modders I think (hope :wink.gif:). I think to steal from Nixon (maybe not a good idea?), that the 'silent majority' supports adfly, but not enough to go and seek out polls against it. It's just that few people dislike it enough that instead of asking for mirrors, they want it outright banned.
Basically, if you ban adfly, everyone loses: in my case, I'll put my adfly link on MMC instead and everyone will have to go through them. And if you outright ban mods using adfly at all, you'll lose a lot of people posting their mods here, not because of the money but because
The forums are a platform for distributing our mods that we choose to use. You get traffic to the modding section because of us, and the reason modders here get popular is because we make the section worth visiting. If we can't share our mods the way we want here, I'm sure a lot of us will leave, out of principle. You're a platform, not a filterer.
The minute you start regulating mods, the line's been crossed, and where does it stop?

To make it absolutely clear, I have no intention of removing adfly from this forum. I am personally very happy with how it is used. I am just curious for thoughts from users on its use :smile.gif: We had a private discussion between the staff and everyone raised different points. No decisions would be made without consulting users first.

Users don't care about modders though, they only care about jumping in, getting their mod, complaining to the mod author about how it doesn't work and leaving. :tongue.gif:

So nothing is going to happen, but you're discussing what will happen, but you still won't do anything, but you will if people who only care about getting their mod and leaving say you should?
Great.

Let me clarify in bullet points, I wasn't very clear:
1. We have no intention at this time to ban adfly, it is not planned.
2. We are discussing whether or not it should be done, however right now we don't intend on doing it.
3. If community response was unanimously in favour of it being banned then we would look into it.
This poll has so far made it clear users don't want it banned, therefore we have no intention of doing it. I was previously of the opinion that banning adfly was a bad idea, I am using the poll to see if the community opinion reflects my own.

I happen to not like ad.fly, mostly because it hides the real link. If I don't know the real link, it makes it frustrating for me, because then I'm usually re-directed to MediaFire or some other site that I can't access. Therefore, I have begun asking modders to either use dropbox or zippyshare, as 1) I have access to those sites, and 2) They're reliable sources and don't give you viruses or malware or trojans. Google Text ads are the only form of Ad that I can handle, for the same reasons, I might actualy be interested in them because they're based on what you search.
Adfly never bothered me. But that's only because when I click it, all I see is the 5 second countdown, nothing else. (Either NoScript, AdblockPlus, or Flashblock hiding whatever else I guess?)
I've seen some modders have like two Adfly links, and when in doubt, a third mirror just in case. Seems best and completely fair to me--to both modders and the moddees.
Please note that no change is planned, we are just curious for your thoughts. There is no guarantee that the result of this poll will cause any change, we are still discussing what to do.

I don't mind Adfly as a mod user as long as it is beeing used correclty there are a few Developers that i have seen that are actually adflying an adfly link a few times. It is pretty anoying when a download trigers several new tabs, But if i have the option of a direct download and a sponsored one I do chose the sponsored one for those that use it correctly.
As a modder i have not yet used adfly although i am close to releasing my first worthy public mod and i plan on using adfly if it is available. Maybe there should be a way to report link abuse for the very small number of people that do it but i think it should stay for now.
Of course adfly has started to force serveys to get past the link and not just a timer and that is getting to the point of unacceptible.
I am a modder... somewhat, who uses adf.ly, and although i respect that Im not the owner of MCforums and may or may not want to be associated with adfly. I dont feel that this would be a positive change. Nor do i see any bennifit to banning adfly. the only thing that would come from this, are a handful of angry modders. for me that is. i am very happy to make mods, and I am Thrilled to make a small amount of revenue for them as well. Im not showing hostility here, although I Want to be clear, Do Not Ban Adfly From MCForums!
one other thing that i want to mention.
Minecraft is played by MANY AGES! A large majority of them are unable to donate. There are fantastic mods out there that deserver more credit and motivation. This is a form of Motivation for some! And as you know, motivation is what keeps this forum running.
Something else to note, allot of people know that adfly supports the developer. So allot of them dont have a problem waiting 5 seconds for there download.
just saying. thank you for reading this and allowing my input.
I would like to remind people of the malicious potential of adfly links. How do we know who adfly sells advertising space to? How do we know those entities they sell ad space to aren't re-selling this ad space? And them? How do we know that these potential advertisers here are here to just show you an ad? The more hands changed in this deal the more potential there is for malware to spread through these ads.
If you want to support the mods you love, donate!

This was actually one of my concerns when i first started to see it being used. It is possible to block a lot of the adfly content. I just wish there was a better way to monetize that wasn't so spammy. Although i do agree with a previous poster. Alot of people don't have the ability to donate to the cause even if they wanted to. Ultimatly I see adfly as a trend that people will eventually grow out of. It is already being exploited once it no longer becomes profitable and to difficult to maintain it will disappear just like the old get pay to surf the internet scams. Really starting to show my age with that one lol. Until it proves unsafe to use i will continue to support adfly I keep my computer updated and use plugins to block most internet spam before it is even displayed. I would like to see more modders follow Risugami's example though. He always puts an alternate download link without adfly and even though i always use the adfly link it is nice to know that i don't have to. I really like to try out various mods and i think adfly has lead to more incomplete/low quality mods that people are just using to try to make a little cash.
