I just posted this elsewhere so here it is, copied :Diamond:

Stats are saved in:
C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\stats\stats__unsent.dat
and
C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\stats\stats__unsent.old
There is a StatsSyncher.class in Minecraft that deals with these files and switches them AFAIK.

If you want to make a backup, simply copy those 2 files.

Hint: Stats and achievements are stored in the same file.
