How?
Me and a couple of mates all have minecraft (legit)
And we'd like to play together over a lan connection through ad hoc or cable.
Is it possible to do with the current server software?
does the server have to run on a seperate computer to the client?
+rep and cookies if you can tell me

First, download the server software.
Second, run the software.
Third, connect to it by typing 127.0.0.1
Fourth, go to run and type ipconfig it should say your local ip.
Fifth, give everyone the local ip and tell them to connect.
Sixth(Optional), edit the server properties and set online mode to false.

If you connect with different accounts you shouldn't have the same username, no. At least not to my experience.

ah be we are not connected to the internet while we do this..

You don't need to be online. There's an offline option when it fails to login, but you can still use multiplayer.

And if you see option six in the setup provided above you can set offline mode to false so the server won't try to verify the usernames.

I am having the same problem.  Only one other person can connect in offline mode due to both names being Player...

I would think that the two different IPv4's would define the two players but no.  

Any solutions yet?

When I watch the CMD window, while I join, it says "127.0.0.1 connecting" then it says "kicked...you need to login!"
then it says "127.0.0.1" disconnected.  Last, minecraft crashes.  Any help?

i type ipconfig in run and a window (the command window thingy with black screen) comes up and closes in a milisecond! im using a laptop, windows 7 ispiron...dell..

i could connect to the server but its laggy (i guess cuz my comp has to run it) and also i read the other thread and it said i could change things in the server.properties file....there is no server.properties file...and the server is on easy or somthing...i want it on peacfull! what can i do to fix these issues?

for all of you lazy people, just get a network cable, plug it to two computers, run a server with the ip from cmd like above, and you got a server.
