IC Name: Baldrick StoneThunder
IC Age: 62
Profession: Item Smith
Background: Baldrick was born to an average family of little renown. He was a hard worker, doing projects with his father and two brothers. One day while working upon an aqueduct for a nearby farm, they stumbled upon a lessor demon settlement. Both races were startled by the appearance of the other, the demons quickly gaining the upper hand, using their claws and teeth, crude weapons to pour out from the small settlement, forcing the unarmed workers back in terror. They pushed them all the way back to the farming town, killing a few workers along the way. Baldrick's youngest brother was one of the first to go, holding them back with nothing more than his pickaxe before he was brought down by a hurled stone from the little demons.
After being holed up in the little town for two days, Baldrick's older brother and father, along with a few other strong dwarves decided to try and clear the demons out. They had few weapons, mostly hammers and axes. Baldrick was forced to stay behind, guarding the young and elderly. It was a noble effort, the dwaves forcing the demons back from the village, chasing them through the tunnels. Both sides took heavy loses, but it seemed they had won. A messenger returned to the village, telling them it was safe to leave their hiding places. Baldrick learned his father was killed in the skirmish, having a tunnel collapse on him, sealing the demons back in their caves.
Baldrick as his older brother both knew it wouldn't be long for the lessor demons to carve the tunnel out. They returned home, gathering their armor and weapons before returning to the distant village two days later. It was quieter than before, the people leaving to find homes elsewhere, not wanting to be so close to a lessor demon hive. Swearing vengeance, the brother's reopened the tunnel, taking the demons by surprise. The two beserk, heavily armored dwarves rushing in and destroying every demon within reach. By this time, news had reached the nearby lord. He sent a group of his soldiers to deal with the issue, wanting to wipe the demons out. When they arrived, it was too late. They found Baldrick and his brother deep inside the city, covered in blood. Baldrick was alive, his hammer swinging, rocks splitting as demons fled before him in terror, his coarse voice bellowing in rage. His elder brother holding onto Baldrick's side, his eyes empty, his skin pale beneath the shattered armor and dried blood.
It is said that the Lords soldiers were too scared to approach Baldrick until he passed out, having either killed or chased off every demon. One veteran was horrified by the sight. Demons feeling in terror? In all his wars, all his battles, he had never seen a demon flee. Even the lessor demons, with their lack of intelligence and stature would fight to the bitter end. He viewed Baldrick as something worse than a demon himself.
Baldrick woke several days later, covered in bedding and bandages in the Lord's manner. He found himself missing his right eye, covered by a dark patch. When it was found he was finally awake, he was cleaned up and brought before the Lord to tell his tale, commended for his brave effort. Baldrick thanked the Lord for his praise, his voice sounding empty and hoarse.
He left the Lord's home that night while everyone slept, taking only the bare essentials as he traveled across the land, not wanting to be near the tunnels where he lost his family, tired of the dwarves praising him despite his losses. He was anger, bitter, and left feeling empty. He was still young for a dwarf, but he appeared far older, his eye seeming void of youth and joy. After months of travel in the over world, he decided to stop running. He was allowed entrance into the great dwarven hall in the distant land where he swore his allegiance to the Paragon.
He now works as a miner and a builder for the great city, quiet and reserved. The other dwarves avoid the stranger for his appearance and cold demeanor. Baldrick wondered if he would ever recover from the memories of his homeland, or would he continue to spend his days filled with thoughts of regret?
