well he could just give an option to change the name that other people in multiplayer see but keep the username

Seems like an excellent idea, post this in the suggestions ( first, do a search and make sure it isn't already made.) after words make sure to bump it actively

Thanks for asking the question but the answer feels unsatisfactory. As above it would be preferable if notch could allow usernames to be changed even if log in names were kept the same. That way both parties would be happy. Could you put that to notch?

What I feel the response implies, is that the process isn't viable right now, but perhaps in the future he'll implement it when he has the time. We all know that it's a popular request. I'm not going to hound him over something like a name change.

I too wasn't aware the ingame name would be the account name. I've sent several emails with no response still.
I understand that it may not be viable, but as a customer I should have been informed somewhere on the website that the account name would be the ingame name, and I wasn't. This seems to be a recurring issue due to lack of information of the website, and for that reason I think it should be looked at and fixed.

This thread has the most views in the current support forum and yet no response. I have been trying to reach Notch and crew since the beginning of September and not even a remote response.

I kind of have the same issue, but I can totally live with it, for now. It seems like most online games solve this problem by having an account name, then under that account, you have one or more characters, each with its own public name, skin, etc. I wonder if anything like that is planned for MC multiplayer?

That's a sorry response and doesn't resolve any issue at all. The fact is people are asking for a name change.

I think it actually would be possible.
Maybe when Notch isn't working on the large stack of work he's already put in front of himself, he can work on it.
Could just leave the usernames as is and create a display name feature.

I sort of want to change my name as well. I too didn't know my account name would be my in-game name, but the thing is, my name is all lowercase, I want it to show up like my forum name. It isn't a big deal, but would that be possible to do since it isn't a complete name change?
